Headspace in Lathe - Depth Mic, Dial Indicator, Or??

Simple holder machined from bar stock. Drilled through same size as dial indicator which is held by a set screw. Bottom portion drilled larger to allow clearance for headspace gauge protrusion. Stand it up on a surface and zero the indicator. Hold it against the face of the barrel and it'll indicate + or - from flush. View attachment 1378287
I made this several years back but I like digital for the simple fact that zero'ing it out is a touch of a button.

So I checked my last chamber with my Depth Mic, A mid level dial indicator, and the DRO on the Lathe. Here were the numbers, and each tool repeated the measurement several times.

Depth Mic = .373, DRO = .3735, Dial Indicator = .374

Similar to some others here...from Mr. Tooley's suggestion. No rocking of the depth gage on the go gage- precise measurement of gage protrusion. Sized to slide over tenon and seat on the shoulder.
This gives total dimension shoulder to gage, so just subtract tenon length. You could machine a smaller cylinder to seat on the breech, to direct read the gage on a nutted barrel sans shoulder.

This Mr. Tooley stuff makes me feel old.

And the DRO takes seconds. Winner DRO in my opinion.

I have an old depth mic i cut one side off of that i use when im not using the 1” ball and mic setup or the dial indicator that slides over the threads. The depth mic with one leg cut off works very well

Could you post a pic of your tools when you get a chance? This thread has become a very useful info source for measuring headspace on a lathe.

Dave may have told Dwight to make a ring with a mic stem in one end !

But Dwight told me to make one of these to measure h/s well over 30 years ago...
