Hard time choosing a barrel & chamber reamer: long range M14 clone

Mr. Ten-X said:
Shot the 180gr "Wayne's Whistler" VLD from the M1A and that bullet shot as well as I could point them. Used that same bullet in my Palma rifle all the way through the Nat'ls in '97 with irons and ended up like 6th in the Tompkins agg. Elevation at 1000 was stellar. As soon as Wayne Anderson of Burlington WI could no longer get the SIE jackets, he pretty much pulled the plug on making them. Lots of teary eyes when he quit pulling the handle on his bullet press.

"could no longer get the SIE jackets"

And THAT is the same reason I quit making the Delta Precision Bullets! I was using J4 jackets and all had to come through GUESS WHO?? I got tired of the hassle!!

Here are a couple of pictures of an EBR. Tested at the Rock Island Armory and then taken to Camp Bullis TX to see how it shot at distance. At the time we had thought we could get the EBR apporved for Service rifle since the M110 is and there are 3 times as many EBR's in service in the combat zone and CONUS as there is the M110 platform.
At the time of the pictures we where testing the 168 Hybrids.

Not all that great. I have shot them out of my Palma rifle with success however. They shot OK but the 185 Juggs seemed to hold better elevation. There was not alot of time to do massive work up on them. So that testing was limited. The Marines where nice enough to lend a hand at Quantico and the 185gr load ws developed there. So it got alot more attention than the 168 hybrid did.

Hope that aswers your question??

Russ,

Thank you for sharing your 168 H experience.

Glad you mentioned the 185s for service rifle. Col. Tryce picked up an Armalite M110 NM version, and I am going to give him a hand in his load development. Will save some time if you could share your guys' 185s load. I assume the 185 HPBT LRs or Juggernauts Target, as they are called now.

FYI, I've used the 168 H at 1000 with my 14.

Thanks.

Nez

Russ,

Where does the EBR stand on being adopted as a service rifle? If there are 3x as many EBR's as there are M110's seems that it should be.

Failed... NRA didnt want to add it. Non of our team staff sits on the board. This was about 3 years ago for the attempt to add it. Guess maybe and im just spit ballin here is that the M14 is already on it so why add the EBR? Same Gun diffrent Stock is all.

Sorry.

Well, I think I made my decision. Nez agreed to loan me his reamer when the time comes, so I'll use his chambering. I'll go with the 1:11" twist but now I just have to decide if I want or need an Obermeyer 5R contour.

Any reason I shouldn't? I'm going to call Ted Brown and see if he can finish an unfinished kreiger 5R. If he can't, I'll give Jon Wolfe a call.

Thanks again for all your helpful information.

Tony.

...turning this into a zombie thread because there's so much great information here with all the cool kids participating.
Two corrections;
Through all the years with many great military service rifle shooters behind the ARs, there is still a record that has not been broken, the individual Interservice 1000 point aggregate set by a Marine with his battle rifle - 995-50X
Nez, I'm pretty sure you're talking about the USMC's Eric England who set the record at 998-45X in 1968 shooting a Winchester M70 Match Rifle in 30-06 (his team mate Don Bartlett had set the record minutes ahead of him in the same match shooting an earlier relay). His record stood for 41 years until it was broken by Sheri Gallagher with a 999-66X shooting a Tubb2K in 260 Rem. Eric England who passed away in 2018 had an amazing life as a Marine. Worth learning more about and can be read about in "The Phantom of Phu Bai".

Billy C as we refer to him on the team. Never shot for the AMU. He shot for the All Army Reserve team as did his son Sgt Chris Atkins. He does indeed have the most wins on the Farr trophy.. tied with two other shooters, one a Marine Joe Sopko and an AMU shooter SSG Scott Grant. all have won the Farr two times. Billy C with an M14 and SSG Grant with an AR10/M110. Not sure what Joe shot both times.
Russ,
As noted earlier, Joe Sopko is USN Retired but accomplished his feats as a Civilian. What I think is most fascinating is that I believe he won his Farrs with an M1 Garand. Can anyone confirm this?
