Hard or soft rifle case

I have two hard cases. One plastic, one aluminum. Three soft cases, on the small side. The two benchrest rifles and the AR only fit on the hard cases, all the others fit on the soft. I haven't used the aluminum case in two and a half years, too heavy.
I'm very careful packing stuff in the car, and the trip to the range in 45 minutes, half expressway and half country road in excellent shape.
The range has a very smooth gravel road for the last 1/4 mile or so, but it is smooth. Well paved road before that. No jolting or potholes. It IS a very nice range.
Anyhow, if it fits in the soft cases, that's where they go.

TSA compliant, top loader. Easily holds a 30 inch FClass rig. It's not really soft. Fabric covered hard sides. Love mine.

which is your preference for a rifle case ?
I mostly use very heavily padded soft cases. My rifles basically go from storage location, trunk, range bench, trunk, back to storage location within a couple of hours, so they don't need to absorb abuse.

I have a travel hard case and one air rifle with multiple barrels has a big hard case.

Both.

Bed of pickup or has to be outside (it happens, camp etc) for a while, sometimes at the firing line when I shoot (as I do) in bad wx. Soft case inside that even once at the range or sometimes just moving in the wood, where I do not need hard case protection.
