H-4895 For "Sail"

The title spelling will hopefully let everyone know that there really isn't any powder for sale at the moment. However, I thought some of you gentlemen who appreciate nostalgia might get a kick out of this one in the same way that the "Hoppe's by the gallon" thread did. My old coyote calling partner had a generous collection of powder canisters and this was one of them. Anyone need 20 pounds of H-4895?

My neighbor had one with 4831 about 1972 or so.

I wonder who actually made it? Current H4895 is made by ADI in Australia , their designation ( and what we buy) is AR2206H. This H prefix was added when Hodgdon's started to buy the powder - and adjusted that AR2206 to their requirements. Sometime in the '90's? or early '00's?? Do I remember that AR2206 was closer to IMR3031 or H322 previously? It was certainly a powder used by the NZNRA for 308/144g.
My guess would be DuPont.

Thanks hoz. Sounds like that 20mm cannon was kinda a wierd duck. Went off before the bolt was closed. Had to grease the rounds. Id hate to have to grease the rounds on a vulcan cannon. You might work up a sweat. Doug

Reminds me of a deal I made about 40 years ago. I was slumming at my LGS, and a gentleman comes in wanting to sell the owner some "Cannon Powder...". He and two friends were working a mining claim here in Central Idaho. Two weeks worth, and no gold. They were using this powder. Needed traveling $$$ to get back home to NorCal. Owner was not interested. He thought it was Black Powder. I ask about it and the owner tells me to go outside and make a deal if I want. I walk out with the guy, and look in his trailer.

It's 4831 he bought at a surplus store at home. 100 pound containers shaped like a huge liquor flask with a screw on top cap. He had a full one that still had the seal intact, and one about half full. He offered it to me for $125, iirc. Heck yes, I bought it; I had just purchased a Savage (my first one) 25-06. I took it home and loaded a few rounds. Went to the range, shot three 5-shot groups at 100/200/300 yards. All were sub-moa. A week later I was back at the LGS and the owner asked me what I did. I told him what it was, and he just about cried. I ended up selling him the full one for $500, and shot the rest over a several year period on Rockchucks and a few Coyotes. Second best deal I ever made.
