H-4895 For "Sail"

The title spelling will hopefully let everyone know that there really isn't any powder for sale at the moment. However, I thought some of you gentlemen who appreciate nostalgia might get a kick out of this one in the same way that the "Hoppe's by the gallon" thread did. My old coyote calling partner had a generous collection of powder canisters and this was one of them. Anyone need 20 pounds of H-4895?

I wonder who actually made it? Current H4895 is made by ADI in Australia , their designation ( and what we buy) is AR2206H. This H prefix was added when Hodgdon's started to buy the powder - and adjusted that AR2206 to their requirements. Sometime in the '90's? or early '00's?? Do I remember that AR2206 was closer to IMR3031 or H322 previously? It was certainly a powder used by the NZNRA for 308/144g.

That would go for a premium today!
My Dad bought, 20 Pounds of It, in the Late 1950's ( Nearly, 70 years ago ) AND I'm still Shooting it Today, in my .22-250 Rem, with 50 gr. V-Maxes at, 3,550 FPS ( Been Stored "correctly", ever since New,.. Cool / DRY ! ).
We even used it, in our .30-06's with, 150 gr. Hornady Bullets ( Nearly 50 grs of, it @ 2,900 fps, ish, IIRC ).
$.50 Lb. ( that's, Fifty Cents, a Pound ! ) It's good Chit,. IF, Stored,.. Cool / Dry !!
The Gubmint Bought, Good Stuff ! Made for WW2 and I believe For, our Springfield and Garands in, .30-06 Bruce Hogdon, Bought Gub'mint Surplus Powder ( @ $10 Cents, a lb.,. IIRC ) and,. Re-Packaged it for Sale ( it's Approx., 75 -80 year, Old,. Gun Powder, Now ). My old, H-4895 Still, "Smells",. Good / fresh !

I doubt it RW. That cardboard container has moisture-water stains, is festooned with some kind of white crud, and has broken-open seams, all if which scream ... "Pi$$ poor storage!" :(

It likely sat in someone's unheated cellar, or garage-outbuilding, for decades. Best use? Lawn fertilizer.

Agreed. My thinking was more along the lines of if it were fresh…. I’m sure back in the day there is about $5 of powder there

Had a neighbor that shot old military powder I think 4831 in a .270. What did they burn 4831 in? 4895 was M1 powder. Doug
4895 was used in, the .30-06 for 150 and 173 grain, Bullets.
4831 "might" have been used, in the .50 Cal. with,. 750 grain Bullets ???,.. IDK
I Do know that,.. 32.5 grains of Old Bruce's, 4895 gets Me, 3,550 FPS with, 50 gr., V-Maxes from my .22-250 !
