Gunsmith Lathe with DRO

That looks like it has a huge headstock. If youre wanting to chamber inside it wont be ideal. You may like the middle size grizzly gunsmithing lathe or one of their toolroom lathes

I had a 10X30 Nardini and it was sweet. They are few and far between but for 99% of barrel work they are great. First lathe I ran that what I dialed in what came off. Made in Brazil with Timken bearings.

Those are made in Tiawan now.

It appears that most of these Tiawan lathes are all the same lathe with different badges on them.

Im talking about this one. Its perfect for chambering. You said you had the 14”. Get this lathe and a good dro and you wont be held back on chambering

I'm not held back.

This is mine.

Dave, I looked at a Nardini out in MO some years back and the owner was really proud that it had ceramic bearings. I hear nothing about them anymore have they fallen out of favor?

They haven't been imported in forever is why. After Clausing quit bringing them in no one picked them up again and that was many years ago. I have a 14-40 and it's as big as any 16" machine. Huge and way overbuilt for it's size.

My question was more about the ceramic bearings? According to the owner of the lathe I was looking at they were a game changer.

Mine had Timken bearings. Nothing ceramic about them just good bearings. I had a friend who had 14X40 I used before I got my Clausing and I'm pretty sure it didn't have Timken bearings in it.

What is that Clausing in the back?
14X40 Clausing Metosa. With having the little Nardini and how easy/smooth/trust worthy it was to operate it took me a few years to get comfortable with the Clausing. After getting the Haas up and running I didn't use the Nardini much so I sold it to a friend before moving.

A friend gave me the nicest Clausing lathe that his friend had taken apart and took all the gears out and passed away and no one could find the gears. I called a bunch of paces looking for the parts to get it running with no luck. I eventually traded it to a guy I know for a 4 jaw that fit my lathe.

I was told this the best of the Tiawan lathes.

Smaller is better for chambering. Small and rigid. Consider the extra expense tooling up a 14"-16" lathe vs 10"-12" lathe. I know. With three lathes of varying sizes I had about 45 Tool holders for the Aloris tool posts with accompanying insert tooling. I still have 30 and could use a couple more for full profile threading.
You make money by being nimble. That is unless you're trying to get out of the house for some peace and quiet.

I'm admittedly new to this, but that's why I like my 1440gt - It's heavy enough to be stiff, but not so rigid that you can't feel when something is getting funny.

I replaced my old tired Clausing 6300 with a Taiwanese 1440 called a "Top Turn". Except for the paint, EXACTLY the same lathe as Acer Dynamic 1440G. https://aceronline.net/acergroup/el-dyn1440g.htm
D1-4 mount, 1-9/16 spindle bore, 10" wide ways. Approx 500 pounds heavier than PM 1440 GT. Came with a 6" 3 jaw, as well as the usual stuff (Steady, follower, backsplash, etc). 4 TPI lead screw. Like the PM have to buy chucks extra. Same money at the end of the day. Took some getting used to a real lathe, but it does exactly what I tell it.
