Gunsmith Lathe with DRO

Mine wasnt nowhere near that. Thats highway robbery prices. Mine doesnt have a dro and its almond color. Bought it in 2001 for around 5k shipped with every accessory. Bought it from enco i believe. It is a taiwan machine. For this kind of money id get american made for sure

You can't get American made new in this kind of machine. And this isn't 2001. In 2001 I bought my dodge Ram for $21k. That same truck today is probably $50k.

I priced the Precision Mathews PM 1440 GT at $16k loaded with a DRO. Thats pretty much the cheapest brand new Tiawan lathe loaded with Dro delivered I've priced in that size. Most are over $20k when you add a dro and a chuck, tool post, etc and delivery.

All in all this has been a good thread because I think it highlights the market and what is actually available.

Of course you can buy used.

There is one other thing to keep in mind. Ever since the plandemic importing anything has become extremely difficult. And it is also become extremely expensive. The shipping companies are really sticking it to the vendors. And the people who offload the ships are really sticking it to the vendors. The trucking companies are adding expense. All of this is added to the price.

Id be looking toward a standard modern if i was buying. Made in the usa.
GMC and summit have decent stuff. You can get a gmc 1440 with dro on sale right now for 8 something

I already have a Chinese lathe.

The Summit 1440 Tiawan lathe is about $20k all up. I've already spoken to them. The lathe they are selling is actually the exact same one as the Precision Matthews. Except for some reason they decided to mark it up about $8,000 more than the Precision Matthews. When I spoke to them on the phone the man that I spoke to was very disinterested in selling me a lathe.

If youre looking toward the jet you can get the standard modern for around the same money. Its american made and id take that over the best taiwan out there. You can search around and beat penn tool’s prices without too much effort but you have to email for a quote

The combined entity was incorporated under the name Standard Modern Tool Company Ltd. with operations in Toronto.
Over the last 83 years ownership has changed but the quality and pride has always been of high importance till this day and as always Standard Modern lathes are still manufacturered in North America.

With over 17,000 Standard Modern installations in North America, Standard Modern lathes are being used extensively in precision, high-tech machine shops, used by both the Canadian and United States military and by many technical colleges and trade schools.

I see the odd standard modern come up on the used market here in Canada as they were used in schools back when they were made in Canada.

I would like to pick one up some day.

This lathe looks to be a better value than the Precision Matthews, It comes with a DRO and a Taper Attachment, Although I would call to verify that. Jet is a known and proven machine.

The short spindle on the Precision Matthews is probably a good thing though.

I don't know what power source your current lathe is using, But be sure you take into account that, Because the 1440 lathes are a step up from a 1340 and have more horsepower and most are 3 phase So you will need to have some type of phase converter unless you are in an industrial setting.

The Standard Modern with any accessories and a DRO is going to be closer to 30k plus.

An option I don’t see talked about here much, maybe it’s not known…?

This is the same lathe for 10 grand cheaper all loaded.

This thread is kinda funny to me. All of them with good spindle bearings will do a great chambering job.
If you disagree, tell me why.

I started the thead because I don't know about lathes and I've already been screwed once.

I want a DRO that will hold very small tolerance and the ways and tool holder and crosslide not flex. And something that is not sloppy on the controls.

I'm sure people with experience often don't remember a time when they didn't know anything.

You can put a real good DRO on your lathe unless youre just wanting another. Once you learn all the quirks and downfalls of your machine you can use any old machine, it just takes time and lots of checks to figure out those quirks. Ive never had a dro on a lathe.
