These are DoD released in public domain. Crete, Greece, Austria, Joint exercises.
May bring back some memories for y'all who served.

I'd say the U.S. is well served by these men & our allies in EU. the rifleman is still revered. 2017, 2018, 2019. thought y'all would like to know.

kinda awesome tho. :) thanks. lotta info here. the real deal.

Those pics are from all the ones I brought back from my tours and the one holding the M79 is me. It's a pic that reminds me of that day when I fired it and had a small hot piece of shrapnel fly back at me hitting me on my shirt (no damage). lol, I couldn't believe it and figured from then on I'd better shoot it further than 100 yds unless I just HAD to do otherwise.:D

Awesome.
well, not the shrapnel :)
Bet if you had more pix and experiences remembered; there would be some glad to learn.
thx, pal.

Awesome photo sets, both of you! These do provide some excellent inspiration for photo ideas when at the range! I never served, but can only imagine getting to shoot the really fun toys!

nice pix. You might want to spring for a light bank - diffused light is nice for metal. Chimera is a brand that comes to mind. A cheaper and effective method is to use a 48-60" white foamcore, scored and angled in a shallow V + hang it above your rifle to be photographed. Lose the umbrellas and aim the heads at the foam core. Use alum foil sprayed matte black to capture the spill light... I have shot many cars w the same setup, altho the board was 18' X 40'. same principle. couple pix- 1911 w/ a Chimera; the bolt - is a bare bulb rig that I built. Rugers - windowlight... Iphone. Def fun to combine the 2 passions, right? :)

I'd be interested in seeing your bare bulb rig. I have plans for a 5 bulb rig I was wanting to build for shooting portraits of large groups, but those images are casting really clean shadows with excellent light quality.

I've been thinking about taking an LED continuous light I have and using a diffusing panel to make a small scale bank for hand guns and detail shots. Fortunately I work in the plastics industry and have lighting white materials with specific various % transmissions available to me, so I can get a really nice clean color temp.

Always liked this from the first time Marty showed the brake to me:

Ok, you pushed me over the edge, I'm now starting on a 48" bank light build. Gotta wire up a longer cord so I can hang it as I dont have any C-stands to boom it. Will be fitting barn doors as well. Will get some long gun pics with it once its operational. I have a new stock I'm working on that will deserve some pics once its finished!

I’ll play. Still learning lighting, no classes or formal training. These are from a new to me Canon 1D Mark IV with 24-105L, upgraded from 40d for daughters sport seasons.

Your lighting looks good, I think it's just needs separation from the background. Everything is lit well and in focus. Nothing to draw your eye into any specific focal point. Again, the quality of light is great, even, clean, no hot spots. I think if you flatten the backdrop a bit, to remove shadows and highlights from it will help. Also, elevating the gun off the background can help, you can be creative there.

The bare bulb rig is no more! It was just a ceramic base from a disassembled 1K tungsten fresnel, Arri most likely.
with EGT lamp 1000 w.

The base was bolted to a pigeon plate and held in a c clamp 2 1/2" ball head. very simple.
hard shadows - the point of using it. great for jewelry along with a soft bank + cards.
I boxed it ( light fixture) in using matthews flags so the light didn't bounce all over the studio.

here's a strobe hard light (on left) w 4 other sources + fill. Profoto into opal plex.
Sinar P2, 120mm macro digitar & Leaf 75 Aptus back.

Final protective fire. I shot these with an Olympus OM-PC with 1600ISO film way back when. 1600 film hadn’t been out very long.

I haven’t digitized these. Seems like I do have the negatives though.

I still have a 40D. Not getting rid of it since it has taken some nice photos over the years. Going mirrorless but waiting for a upgrade to the EOS R. In the meantime I picked up an M5 APSC mirrorless to play with. The 24-105 has been my go to lens for a long time.
