.338 LAPUA to .308 Conversion

Hey All,

New here. Shooting is experience is as a masters biathlete (the art of quickly shooting good enough under stress). I'd like to get into big bore, and I'm thinking about taking some courses from a fellow around here who knows his stuff on long range marksmanship. The end goal (from the syllabus) to get shots out 1500+ meters. The obvious platform is .338 LAPUA. However, I have no desire to train and shoot the thousands of rounds required to get competent on .338. Both due to the cost and the kick. .308 seems like a good round for that (thoughts?).

So what I was thinking about doing was buying a Savage 110 .338 LAPUA with the HS precision stock and accutrigger, which would hopefully give me decent groups with only some minor modifications (length of pull, bedding, and comb height). Probably throw a NXS 5-22 on it.

To turn it into a training gun, is it possible to just swap the barrel with a PacNor or something, and then change out the bolt face? I realize the .338 is long action and .308 is typically short action... but it should work, ya? Am I missing something?

Also, is there some other relatively low cost, low effort (e.g. similar or less than the Savage) platform I should be looking at?
