gun balancing

I recently read an article on f-class shooting that stated it was very important to have the gun "balanced". I realize a very barrel light gun could cause vertical stringing, but..........how would one balance a rifle? Where do you balance from and what is the ratio? Thanks

I'd imagine they're talking about keeping the centerpoint of balance somewhere in the middle of the rifle.

For instance; a 30" 1.250" tube will need a little weight in the butt to balance out the heavy nose. Front weight will also determine where your forend sits in the front rest.

On my F/TR rig, I look to have some weight on the rear bag. If it gets too light, the gun will throw all kinds of vertical. It really isn't hard to keep it in balance. If the rig is heavy up front, the front rest needs to be further forward or weight added to the buttstock.

I have to put lead into the stock of my rifle to make it come up to weight, so I put it where it helps with balance. Considering the rather liberal weight limits in F-class, it is easy to balance almost any reasonable barrel profile.

I try to balance rifles at or near the front on the action. Usually this is accomplished by adding lead to the buttstock.
