over all rifle balance

I've got a savage with a 30" 6BR barrel on it. I'm wondering how important the balance of the gun really is forbench shooting. It has a savage laminated stock. Right now it balances right at the muzzle end of the barrel nut. Where shold they balance at? thanks tootalloutdoors

Rifle balance is extremely important if you shoot free recoil, however, the harder you hold the rifle the less important it becomes. Sounds to me like your rifle is balanced just fine. It should balance from an inch behind the front of the receiver to 1.5 in front of receiver. I like mine to balance more to the back,ie: an inch behind receiver face). If you rifle is not balanced, it will show up as vertical on the targets

I have seen rifles preferring free-recoil shooting,1KBR Rifles) balance just ahead of the lug, as well as one that was 4-5" ahead of the lug...I would have assumed the one balanced 4-5" ahead of the lug would hate FR shooting, but it actually shoots best that way...go figure...

So after all that, I can't prove it matters one way or the other...

O.K. Thanks fellas. obviously the 6br isn't beating me to death. It bucks and torques some on free-recoil. You think I should snug it up more in the front rest. For a savage rifle it shoots well. 1/4" groups are common, underground range no wind). I just always wonder if I can improve on it. You know how that is. I gues I wonder how it would shoot at 20 pounds?? tootalloutdoors

Whether its right or wrong I dont know. I am a firm believer in getting proper balance. However I dont balance my rifles to any particular point. I add weight to the butt based on how the rifle tracks. I have the butt pads held on with screws instead of glueing them and add or subtract lead shot until it tracks the way I want, then glue the shot in place. Mine usually end up a little muzzle heavy with the actual balance point well forward of the recoil lug.
