Balancing a 22lb comp rifle

Always refreshing to read the first hand knowledge(with no extra fluff),thank you for posting.

I was wondering about the HV barrel on an Open gun thing,I have never witnessed it myself...but that does not mean much. Maybe at the lower levels of competition it is common practice ?

I guess maybe why I'm not setting any records. Have to try a HV barrel and weigh down your stock to 22 lbs.

I shot open with a dasher HV. Butner in the summer heat. I brought ice and a wet rag to cool the barrel between strings. My last very rounds in each string were going high from the barrel heat. I never had that problem in Benchrest with a HV. Exposed firing lines and unlimited sighters can be too much for a HV in my opinion. Id have a custom contour if I built myself another open rifle. Maybe even a 1.350 breach.

FWIW, I just checked 2 of my F/Open rifles complete with NF 15-55x Comp’s & 1.25” Bartlien barrels.
1. Ray Bowmen stock, 29” barrel. Weight 19.5 lbs, balance point 3.5” forward of Panda F-Class action.
2. Original McMillan F-Class stock from 2004, 30.75” barrel. Weight 21.25 lbs, balance point 3.25” forward of Panda action.
Seem to work OK to me. I do hold on to my rifles & ride the recoil.

I generally use 1.25" Krieger @30" in f-class. I have tried Broughtons tapered to 1". I think Speedy may have the perfect taper figured out at 1.1". The 1.0" Broughtons seemed to tune a little easier and stay tuned a little better. That all said, I'm going to try a HV with a tuner on it vs. a 1.25" with a tuner on it and see what happens with everything else the same

Thanks for this, especially the part about you style of recoil management. The more i thought about it, seems like how you deal with recoil might well affect it. My rifle has an 8# waterhead attached to the stock.
