Going for a mile

You will have a rainbow trajectory drop at a mile. 1 or 2 clicks can move your impact point by multiple feet. Better get a good spotter to help walk you in......dialing in on a 10" plate at 1000 a few weeks ago took about 10 shots in a 10 mph wind. That was with two spotters confirming impact point.....

Last time I shot 1800 yards with my WSM I was holding 9 1/2 MOA of wind and it is a hell of a rainbow to get there. each click is 4.5 inches at that distance so knowing holds and REALLY good glass is a MUST!

Dragman- I have a 1-8 Rock Creek on my 300 wm now. Before that I had a 1-9 R.C. and before that a 1-9 Bartlin 27 in on all of them. I have a TAC 300 (Stiller) action AICS 2.0 and Timney. I change optics sometimes between my NXS 5.5-22 to my Gen.II 4.5-27. I generally sight in @ 100 yards. I use Norma brass and shoot several different projectiles. Berger 215s, 230 OTM and Target, ELDM 208gr. and Flat Line 198 gr. so as you know my holds will be different for each projectile. For as much as I shoot I like the Hornady ELDM line, especially for the price but I have not shot them enough to see how they fly past 1200 yards. You can't go wrong with Berger bullets and Flat Line is something new I started shooting bc my curiosity of the extremely high BC. If you need any thing else message me.

holy crap, an 8" twist for .300 wm. the last time I read about an 8 twist .30 barrel was in "precision shooting at 1000 yards" where craig slack and bruce artus were shooting out past 3000 yards. one rifle was a .308 AI with 8" twist obermyer shooting 220 sierras

i shot a mile recently here, 1200 ft elevation and hot sticky air. 30-06 with 208 hornady amax over 58.5 gr of RL22. I have a 16x mark 4 leupold on it and there's 140 moa of elevation in that scope. with a 20 moa base I still have use all the elevation and then hold over, but on a 18"X24" steel plate I made a second round hit at a mile. We've got a spot to shoot from one hill top to another hill base into a plowed field so it's easy to spot impacts. About 3.5 seconds to get there.

So I'd like to go for a mile and realize it might be a long shot. Pun intended? But anyways, I have a 300 win mag, just the sps model with the sporter 1-10 twist 26" barrel. Bushnell 6500 4.5-30x50 on top. Looking at those Flatline projectiles from warren tool and looking at the numbers, I'd have enough adjustment to get me there with the 20 moa base I have. Question is, what is the probability of that rifle getting me that far accurately? Is it worth the effort? I was going to try it out at 1000 yards first before I make a long haul to a range that let's me go out to a mile. I haven't changed anything on the rifle itself mostly because it was intended for bear, if I ever go for it. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.
We use a 300WM Savage BA. 220grain Sierra's with 67.2gr of RL22 to go to a mile. We have a 20moa rail and 10moa on the Burris rings. The scope is the Super Sniper from SWFA. Targets are 18"square and 12"square. All of the kids shooting this at a mile have connected in the first 3-6 shots. Hits on target are ranging from 25% to as high as 60+%. The kids are all members of the Wickenburg High School Rifle Team in Wickenburg, Arizona and all are regular F-Class shooters.

Do you have a way to make your 100yd zero be at the bottom of that scope's elevation range? I think the first part of the question is, how much 'up' is really available or can be made available.

Pick a exceptional condition day for the mile or chances are you will be disappointed. I have a rum that is a hammer at 1000 and the mile humbles me most days, wind wind wind. Lots of things going on from the bench to the mile. Good shooting!

I shoot a 284 using 162AMAXs and have shot out to a mile several times. The first time I did it I had a MK4 Leupold and was using Burris rings with the off set plastic inserts set for 20MOA. It was in the 80s and I was at around 62 to 63MOA to hit the target. Another time I was up to 66MOA. The target was 36x40 something. First time out I was dead on for wind with the first shot but was a good foot or so low. Next shot was left and then a hit on the 3rd and miss on the next then I believe I had 3 out of 7 hits the fist time I tried it. I have tried it several times since including last weekend and like the guys said it can be humbling. Wind is such a big factor. We don't have much for wind flags so it can really be frustrating. I now have NXS Nightforce and use a 20MOA base for it. I have no problem dialing for a mile. My son in law uses a Vortex PST and runs out of elevation with his. What I found interesting is one of the times we were shooting a friend of ours had a 338 Lapua and his dials and mine were the same for the 1777yds we were shooting. I was actually amazed that the 162s would do that well at a mile...

This year's prairie dog shoot at 1 mile ( the rocks at the top of the picture ) ..........

The rifle was a trued Remington long action converted to single shot in .300 Win Mag., Shilen 1/10 barrel shooting 175 grain TMK at 3205 fps ( bullet drop ballistic coefficient adjusted for the JBM program 'til it matched real world ). Stocky's / Bobby Hart IBS 1000 stock, Calvin Elite trigger set at 8 ounces, 40 MOA scope base, along with a Sightron 8-32 X 50 fine crosshair scope ( could still barely make out the PD behind the crosshair ). Easily made it to 1 mile; at 1825 yards, I was out of elevation in the scope. Early morning, 70 degrees, no mirage & virtually no wind ( 0 mostly, gusting to 2 mph at times ;) ). All of the shots were literally within a 1-2 feet circle of them ( sometimes inches to the right, sometimes inches to the left, other times inches in front ). As another poster stated, time of flight was 3.5 or so seconds - easily enough time to get back in the scope. Took a few for the hit. I believe a man size target would be no problem.

I purchased a 338 EDGE just to see if It was possible for me to hit a target at 1 mile. This will not be easy as I live in N FL with no long range facilites close by. I plan on finding a 1,000yd range first to get good data and then finding a place/places to reach out to 1 mile. If Camp Blanding opens its 1,000yd range in the next 12 months to civilian competition things will be looking good.

Supposedly we will be shooting the 1000 yard range at Blanding this year. We can only hope.
