Funding has stopped

Let me see if I have this right. With the mention of the DOC it sounds like your wife collects a pension plus social security and in nine months you will too. In your previous post you mention that you two have been preparing for this for 30 plus years and are set up financialIy. If that is the case, you are in better shape than a large percentage of the population who have come to rely on a 401K that carries no such financial guarantee. If that synopsis more or less sums it up, I am left scratching my head over this crying poor thread. I say count your blessings and be thankful for what you have. You will still figure out how to collect more toys. A lot of people reading this thread wish they had it so good. Amazing what people will bitch about.

I don’t know if you are funding future shooting for when you are retired or for now?

If you’re working that much overtime how do you also have the time for shooting?

I like 4 10’s for a work week schedule, and budget accordingly to have as much me-time as possible. Less hours, more $/hr to me is the key. I could not imagine voluntarily choosing to work weekends and holidays. I work some with my job, on call some, couple hundred hours of overtime a year. If I had my choice I’d work zero overtime and I’d be fine. Maybe I live like a poor?

Some think tank in NYC has determined that $140,000 annual income is now the poverty line. Sigh...
Which think tank?
Actually probably not far off.
Remember that NYC ( correctly City of New York) is virtually the exact opposite in every way from the of New York State.
The City of NewYork consists of 5 counties, always called ‘boroughs’ ( old Dutch term). To make it more confusing the official name is not always what they are called except in legal documents or courts.
Kings County (Brooklyn)
Queens
NewYork ( Manhattan)
The Bronx
Richmond (Staten Island)
$140,000 per year won’t be nearly enough in Manhattan
Parts of Brooklyn not really enough
Queens your ok
Staten Island your probably ok
The Bronx well it will most likely be stolen from you
The above is said somewhat with tongue in cheek but not far off reality.
Some places in the 5 boroughs are 3rd world countries.
Lived in the city for years. It’s a dump that’s crime ridden and with the new communist mayor about to take office the exodus from the city will be even greater.

Living on a fixed income in retirement can be a challenge but it can be managed especially if one is healthy enough to get a part time job to supplement one's income. For me, that's not an option due to declining health so I try to manage my disposable spending.

What I found useful is using an Excel spread sheet to track all my fixed and variable costs and trying to live within my means.

One of the actions I took was to simplify my shooting hobby so I could stay active. Since I do not hunt big game anymore, this was relatively effective consolidating to two rifle calibers, the 22 LR and 223 Rem. I get a lot of economical shooting from these calibers. For example, I get about 280 reloads out of a 1 lbs. can of powder for my 223's.

I'm currently setting up and have not made it to the rat patch yet. I started completely over in 2019. The plan is to be 100% setup and in the patch by May 2027 sir.

Sounds about like me with a spread sheet and being OCD. Rebuilding and choosing to do varmint hunting again was my decision with the wife's blessing to take on and keep me active. When not in the patch, I will be supporting my addiction in the garage reloading.

Mike, look at it this way....
You've already got some very nice rifles, same goes for your loading area and the kit you've already purchased.
From what I read here since you arrived, you've also got some quality loading tools in that area to keep you busy once retired, and rifles to keep clean.

I retired in 2008, collecting my VA disabled vet bennies and SS. Wife also is retired, collecting both SS and her pension from Nosler and her previous employment. I'm able to spend at least 30 days+ in the rat patch every season as long as I don't get silly buying crap I should not be buying with the rifles and gear I already have. I've not even touched my lifetime savings, just living on the above.

With you qualifying for PERS along with your wife, you should not have trouble enjoying our hobby with the way you're set up right now. Don't despair, you have it much better than many that also enjoy the hobby. I predict you'll be more than happy once retired with the way you've already set yourself up. And now without the OT, you'll be able to spend more quality time at home before the big day arrives next year.

Some might say you've already got it made in the shade.

My plan for retirement (some way off), is to acquire all the capital items beforehand. Stock up on brass and bullets and other bits and pieces. Should make for an affordable hobby on retirement. Obviously everything else, house, cars etc. needs to be paid for and well maintained before quitting.

Don't forget a little luck that we remain healthy!

We are prepared Rick, as you know. We are set and ready to retire. We will be fine. This is the first time in 30 years that all OT has come to a halt. I almost made it by doing OT. As mentioned, if needed I will go stand the street corner or deliver pizzas. I'm not going to dig into the budget. I have options.

PERS and SS will more than get us by. Like you, we don't plan to touch our life saving till / if needed for a long time. Both of us are in good health. At least for now. She's even planning to lend a hand in the reloading department as well as keep me company in the patches!

I hope all is well on your side of the mountain, sir.

Mike reading this and others comments just motivates me to keep working while I can and put away.
I have friends who have a new car every 3 years and I keep mine until I have no choice. My last one I had for twelve years and only upgraded to bigger truck because we wanted a camper.
I hope one day to make it to the famous Oregon fat patches and share a beer with you, Rick and other Oregon folks who have guided me along my venture
