Front Rest Question

I currently own a Caldwell Rock BR Competition front rest with a Protektor custom 3" square ear slick silver bag installed that I picked up used for $100.

My question is do I sell it for a Protektor #61 Windage Aluminum Rest, or scrap the top on the Caldwell and purchase a Shadetree joy-stick co-axial rest top?

My current (used) set up seems to be working just fine, but I've had a terrible case of 'upgrade fever' that has been gnawing at me ever since I built (and received) my 1st F-Class rifle a few months ago.

FWIW, my rifle build is as follows: BAT M action with a 20MOA rail, Krieger 30" MTU barrel with a Kelbly MB. This was installed in a McMillan Kestros stock. Jus scratching the surface on load work up but I had a 3 shot group with it that measured 1.75" center to center at 600 yards. Caliber is 300WSM.

TIA Stu.

Buy the shade tree. If you want to upgrade again then you can take that top with you. I’m not sure if the post size is the same for a bald eagle, but that could be another small step. You may never need to do more than just the new top though

Not sure if you insist on joy stick or not but I’d Go ahead and buy the Sinclair and be done with it, then concentrate on loading, consistency, wind flags, etc.

Great looking gun. I have the mentioned Sinclair and it is a fine rest, I don't know if it's the best choice for F-Class type shooting. I don't shoot F-Class, but if I did I would look (ask) and see what is being used most and go with that. It looks like you went with great components on your rifle build. Do it justice by doing the same with your rest............Happy Shooting

At the time I wasn't looking to buy a front rest but stumbled on the Caldwell. I thought for $100 I would give it a try. Figured at some point I would sell it and not get hurt considering what I paid for it used. I was beginning to explore my options when I started this thread.

The Caldwell came with it's original bag installed on the rest in addition to the after market Protektor slick silver bag. My plan now is to sell the caldwell rest with the original caldwell bag and look for a higher end used front rest and consider buying new. I had been considering the Sinclair mentioned already but really like the whole idea of a joystick co-axial front rest. (Hence the consideration of the Shadetree top upgrade).

If I did go this route, I know at some point I would be getting the itch to upgrade to a higher end set-up. At this point, that would be the SEB Neo but I'm not ready to wait that long to get one, in addition to spending another $1,900.00 or so to purchase one...

Anyone care to weigh in with their experiences and recommendations on any other brand/models of higher end front rests?

If I was going to be shooting off of the potentially uneven ground I think I would look at highly adjustable legs and a rotating top with a joystick. If I didn't want to put out 2K on a rest, I would keep my eye out for a used Seb Mini. I have seen them recently around here from $800 to $1,200. depending on mostly aftermarket upgrades..... I personally own a Mini and at one time or another have had all the available Sebs. I like the Mini the best for its portability and rotating/lockable top...........Best of Luck

For F Class you really want a joystick rest. Farley and and Shadetree are nice but Seb is the nicest. If you say with F Open you’ll end up with one sooner or later..

3 guys at our club use the 1200, no complaints. One moved from a Farley to the 1200. They are shooting off benches.

I would suggest getting on the waiting list for a SEB and plan to have the cash saved up for when it arrives. If money is tight and you want to keep it as economical as possible, order the original seb mini. You will be money ahead in the long run if you get the right rest to start with. The nice thing with the SEB rest is if you don’t like it you can get most, if not all, of your money back selling it used. BTW I don’t know anybody that has gone from a SEB to a Farley. I know several that went Farley to SEB.

Sebastian is now producing and taking orders on his new rest - Neo X. I suspect when production gets ramped up there will be a lot of Neo owners doing an upgrade and looking to sell their older Neo. Good advice to tuck away some cash to be able to jump on an advertised used Neo.

Anyone have any experience with this front rest?

Thoughts?
We have a 2000LP and an unlimited. Great adjustable one piece set-ups. Shade tree makes a great piece of machinery and Butch's service is second to none! We have 3-4 of his tops and love them.

SEB also is a great rest. Movement for what seems like miles. My Dad has a Ratigan and loves it.

FWIW, Funds are always a sensitive issue, but that is not the over riding factor regarding my selection on a front rest. I began this search thinking I could swap out the Shadetree top and be done with it. After too many years of buying something that will 'function', I had decided that 'just good enough' wont cut it any more.
Right now I'm considering the Randolph, Model 1200 & the Model 2400 front rests. Any thing else I should be considering in the $1,100 to $1,400 dollar range?
