FREEDOM BENCHREST

“As I stated, I do like a number of things FB proposes to do. The people who run these matches are often overworked and under supported. And now the proposal is to run possibly multiple organizational matches at individual ranges. Doesn't sound like a great situation. In fact, I think it will end up where decisions will be made to support one set of matches over others.”

I am one of those folks who run these matches. It’s simple for me; I will run the form of match that my shooters want in the interest of not holding hard feelings or being stubborn.
 
Hello shooting family,

I hope all of you enjoyed reading the rules of Freedom Benchrest and your interested in it.

I believe this is going to help our long range shooters decide what they which to do and bring in more shooters.

I like to welcome all of you to join us its for the better of the sport that we all enjoy so much.

Jackie, that's what the problem was in the organization that I belong too. In the past some rules were clearly not followed and that's when some members got upset and one match director was so upset that he stopped holding IBS matches at his range and went to the UBR format. We had people shooting matches who were winning and collecting SSOY points and Precision Rifleman points and their membership lapsed two and one half month's before the season was over. Well guess what happened because one of these guy's was a big name shooter in the end they just let him pay his dues and swept it under the rug. BIG MISTAKE. It left A LOT of people out there with a bad taste in their mouth, me included because if it were a nobody like me who did that I GUARANTEE they would of said sorry Jim the rules clearly state that you have to be a member to shoot and collect any kind of points. I'm not mentioning any names but there are a lot of people in Accurate Shooter land who know who it was. There were a few more times that the rules weren't followed like having illegal rifles, the target backers that didn't have the right spacing, people getting to the range early and confiscating a known honeyhole bench without drawing one, ect and it turned guy's who were friends with one another into enemies. Like I said this USE to be a fun sport. I honestly think that's why the Tackdriver is so good for all sorts of shooters out there whether it's long range or short range everyone seems to get together at a shoot that's laid back and there are no points involved and I haven't heard one shooter that said anything less than that's the best shoot and I had more fun at that shoot than any other. We need more shoots like that.

I hope the rules favor the better shooters. In NBRSA and IBS,a shooter can win the war without winning a battle. There have been plenty of instancies where a shooter has won the match(2gun,3gun,and 4gun) and all the HOF points without winning a single yardage or even small group!

So you think consistency shouldn’t count? I guess you wouldn’t think it was unfair if you agged 2” over (4) targets and someone beat you that agged 6” just because they beat you by one thousandth of a inch on one of the four. I know I would personally be looking for answers
 
I believe that most serious long range bench rest shooters agree that a sanctioning body is a good thing. Maybe some would say it’s a necessary evil for national organization of a sport. Some of the non-sanctioned matches like the Rendezvous turn out to be the “most fun” but in my mind they are just welcome breaks from rigid rules you may not agree with. Relative to sanctioned matches, there are always going to be rules you like and maybe some you object to - that’s par for the course and you just need to put your big boy pants on without developing “hard feelings”. As I’ve met more competitors through the last few years, I’ve been struck by the number of shooters who seem to think the game is all about them. If the rules don’t favor them, then they have to be bad rules - not. Unfortunately, some of those shooters are the ones who have had a fair amount of success or been involved a long time. Please note, I just said some, I did not say all. Bottom line, I believe narrow mindedness by a controlling few can lead to stagnation within an organization. If that occurs, you should break away from it either through correction within or create a rebirth from outside. Heads have been beaten bloody on a brick wall over the last three years trying to change from within. I like the name Freedom. It reminds me of a rebirth.

What the rules say, is not as important to me as seeing that the rules uniformly followed. The more complicated the rules, it seems, the easier they are to be tweaked here and there.

I am interested in an association whose rules are simple, clearly defined, and most importantly structured to allow matches to be fun - like the Tack Driver and the Rendezvous. I also want an association that is clearly responsive to all shooters not just “the big boys”. I agree, putting rule changes directly in the shooter’s hands opens the door to too many changes and potentially some bad changes. I’m willing to deal with that possible negativeness in exchange for a “by the shooters, and for the shooters” structure.

I have talked to several this week that did not realize they, as 1000 yard shooters did not shoot the same format as the 600 yard crowd. Nor did they realize that if you shoot the smallest group and highest score in a class, you actually get those awards that your earned in 600 yard competition.

This group may just "take off". The leadership is near the same as the old IBS had. Many were critical of how the IBS election was run. Many also were tired of the confusion with the 1,000 yard operation. It sure was crazy to win your relay and then find out you won nothing but a chance to go against other finalists while the majority of shooters had to sit around and do nothing.

That whole IBS 1,000 yard format just seemed like a confusion.

As for 600, it scores in a rational manner. The idea of a 6 minute or 2 minute sighter, followed by a 10 minute shot for score just seemed to waste time for many shooters. As popularity and multiple relays were needed, the idea of a 10 minute period to both sight and shoot for score should make things run more stable and efficient. Being able to go back to your sighter during your score shots has to be a bonus.

Fellow at Manatee today told me he would get confused on the number of shots he already had for score. Duhhh??? Isn't that why shooters have blocks with 5 or 10 holds for there record shots? Life can be hard if you're dumb.

Manatee will be trying this all out starting with the matches in April. Show up and see how it works 4th Saturday in April.

One thing I sort of regret is that many ranges will be dropping IBS. Not sure if that is a good thing or just an opportunity to move on to what may be a better program.
 
I'm nobody and I have no say in the rules at all . I do feel like shooting sighters in the record round is just going to raise the odds of getting a target shot from another bench .
