Kevin should have my Practical done around the end of next month. I plan on using the 39 grain pill from Sierra. I know you also had yours short throated, and I am curious what length you ended up using.

I'd like to start getting some loads ready.

Mike, the short throat is designed into the reamer so 0 length freebore is standard unless you ask the gunsmith to cut it longer with a throating reamer. With my standard 0 length freebore chamber I load my 32 VMs to 1.836",using a Stoney Point gauge to measure OAL). I don't shoot heavier bullets through my Practical as I have the 20 PPC and 20 BR for those. But if you don't have a Stoney Point gauge and need a measurement I can take one for you. Just let me know.

I have just run into my first problem though. I had ordered the 17 Remington decapping assembly to convert my .223 neck bushing die over. The assembly is way to long, and also I can't interchange any of the parts, as they are different thread sizes. I'm going back now to re-read your article, perhaps I ordered the wrong item? Perhaps I should just order the decap assembly for a .204, I'd think that would work?

Yes, years ago when I did the 20 Practical,I did it 1 1/2 years before the article was posted) the .204 expander assembly didn't exist. This is why I used a .17 Rem assembly. But you must make sure it is a Type-S bushing die expander assembly. A standard .17 Rem expander assembly will not work in a Type-S die.

Of course now the easiest way to convert a .223 Type-S die is to buy a .204 Ruger Type-S expander assembly.
 
Thanks again. The part numbers for their S-bushing dies spare parts are not in the catalog. I had indeed ordered the wrong part number, and received an assembly for the standard dies.

I will call Redding tomorrow to get the correct components sent out.

I'm also having a 20 Practical built but don't have the Stoney Point gauge to measure OAL. Wondering if you could please measure the OAL for the 32 grainers using a set of verniers.

Have you calculated the 'max case length' and 'trim to length' for your 20 Practical? Would be interested in your measurements if you have them.

Also noticed that my case trimmer does not have a 20 cal centering bit so will have to trim when in a .223 state and then neck down. Do you know how much a .223 Rem case would increase in length when necked down to 20 Cal.?

My chamber measures 1.7635" on the case length. So you should trim just a tad under that. I don't think the case will grow too much after necking down as the neck is short to begin with and you are only taking it from .22 to .20. Why not take a piece of your brass and try it and find out? I would be curious as to what you find. When I neck down 6mmBR cases to 20BR they grow quite a bit.

1. I ran two .223 Rem cases through the .223 Rem type S FL die with a .243 bushing in it.
2. Trimmed them both to a length of 1.725".
3. Ran them through a .233 bushing and length grew to approx. 1.727".
4. Ran them through a .228 bushing and length grew to approx. 1.728".

So they both grew in length about 3 thou.

I had decided that the 'trim to length' should be 1.728" based on similar tolerances with the .222 Remington and .223 Remington shown on the SAAMI drawings. I will dig them out again and walk you through my thought process. Sounds like it might be a bit short though?
 
Trimming to SAAMI dimensions always produces a case too short for one's chamber. The best thing to do is always measure your chamber using one of the Sincliar chamber length gauges that have been discussed here before.

My gunsmith has assured me that the chamber length will be 1.760"...

He therefore recommends trimming brass to about 1.745". What are your thoughts on this length? I was maybe considering trimming to 1.750" instead. Will monitor any case lengthening after firing.

Have you noticed any lengthening after firing?

The cases will actually shorten after the first firing. I did an experiment mentioned before and a case fired 16 times grew only .005". So your trim length is fine and his is too short.
 
Definite yes on the Sinclair tool. I found my .223 chambers to be .020" over the reccomended 1.760 dimension. On Both rifles.

Of course, this was AFTER I had spent many hours trimming a couple thousand cases for a a PD trip.

Best labor saving device out there, IMHO.

Thanks for the feedback. Which gauge will I need for my 20 Practical. I've checked out the link to the Sinclair web page a couple of posts back and there is no 20 cal gauge listed.
