First one of the year!!! Be careful!!

That article was in Outdoor Life or Sports Afield many years ago. We have did this numerous times when our dogs have been bitten by copperheads and it has worked every time. I was telling our veterinarian about it and he remembered it too. He said they were suppose to do more research on it but due to "Big Pharma" getting involved and the price of antivenom you know what happened. I know for a fact it works and have seen it work many times so if I ever get bit that will be the 1st thing I do.
I think this works on scorpion stings too . But I don't think it works on a coral snake bite since it is more of a neurotoxin .

We had our first warm spell a few weeks ago and I found a foot long baby rattler in the road. As I reached for a rock to smash it I saw this other baby curled up behind the rock. I was about 6 inches from grabbing it. Then a 3rd one on the other side of the road. I have killed 8 of these babies in the same 100 yard stretch in the last 3 weeks. Wedgy, I’m probably going to get more animals killed here than admired, in retaliation for supporting them, but statistically some dude is eventually going to post a swollen, fat hand picture from trying to smash a little guy, and I’m going to think to myself, I helped get him bit. ;).

I usually drop a rock on their head but there were so many snakes and some places don't have rocks so I started bringing an extendable hiking stick to whack them on the head then chuck them off the side. If I'm out in the middle of nowhere I leave them be but this trail has a lot of kids and dogs so I remove the rattlers to avoid a meeting of them. Most people are oblivious and walk right over themrattler.jpg

Try using your bare hands.

Edit, that’s a joke, Wedgy. Don’t try using your bare hands. You would get bitten.

The ones out in the “middle of nowhere”don’t really stay there, and even if they did, what’s to keep the kids and dogs from going there, too.

One of my hunting buddies used to head the reptile department at the LA Zoo and said the local rattlers rarely go over 200 yards from their den but the males will travel much further during mating season.
Now the Mojave Greens we have an hour North are a different story as they can be very aggressive. I had one keep coming at me even though I was nudging it away with my shotgun barrel, he just kept coming so he took a forever nap.

Well, by the pictures, the dead snakes are neither the aggressors nor the “dangerous side” of any of these encounters you and them have. I’m wondering if you photograph any snakes that you don’t kill.

Those walking trails, and the “middle of nowhere” … your place? I don’t think so. The kill them all attitude, which 100% works, let’s make no mistake about it, is imposing your idea of nature on everyone.

I might technically and legally be within my rights to spend $500 on bait, daily, and let every undersize game fish I possibly can, swallow the hook that i rip out its guts with, then chuck it to the banks. Maybe then talk about that sound gullets make tearing out. I’m not really making any angler friends doing that kind of thing, right?

Carry on.
