Yeah the Hide just put a complete block on all WTB ads (last week I think) because of these problems. Apparently it was getting out of control over there.
Personally I've had great luck here with WTB ads but you have to careful for sure.

Easy fix. Send me the "whatever" and if I like it, I'll send you the $$$. If not, I'll send it back. Problem solved.

First -- if you do get an obvious "scam" reply to a WTB post, use the "Report" link to notify the Forum Admin. We will take action -- likely deleting the member immediately and blacklisting his IP.
There are multiple things you should always do with any For Sale or WTB transaction.
1. Talk to the seller on the telephone by VOICE. Not just text, not just email, not just a Forum PM. Pick up the phone and dial a number and use your VOICE. If it's a scammer (usually foreign) it will normally be obvious. You can also get tipped off because it may be bounced with some phone forwarding service.
2. INSIST on custom photos. For example, if the guy claims to have a scope, tell him to take it out of the box, tie a ribbon around it, and put in on the dash of his truck, then take a photo of it.
Some people think it's enough to ask for an image with the day's date on a piece of paper. NO. NO. NO. The scammers can do that with photoshop, and unfortunately, some of our members are not wise enough to recognize the photoshop job.
3. I recommend buying and selling with Gold and Silver members. These people all had to have verified financial account in order to purchase the upgrade via PayPal or by bank check.
A Silver membership costs $2.08 per month -- if a person isn't willing to invest that to verify their status, ask yourself why/how are they selling a $3000 rifle or $2000 optic...

Not a big buyer or seller, however this is exactly what I decided was what I limited myself to doing a while ago.
I got burned on this site quite as one time ago by not following the Boss’s rules and recommendations.
$100 hit that was my fault.

Post counts and content are my guidelines. You can tell a lot about someone from their posts and initial impressions, gut feelings, shouldn't be discounted.
I have never been taken by an individual I was purchasing from or selling to online.
Forum Boss: Post costs are useful, but keep in mind that, if a person's cell phone is compromised, a host of accounts might be hacked. One long-standing respected member was using a password manager on his phone that was hacked. His bank accounts, Credit Card, and Forum accounts were compromised in a matter of minutes.
