I killed one next to the house 2 weeks ago. Old lady was going to get clothes off the line. She came right back and said, get the shovel. There’s been a lot of really big ones getting run over on the roads the past month.

Larry you are exactly right, I have good out door lights and the dog goes with me, plus I use Roundup, lots of it! This one that my wife is holding up from last summer, the dog bayed on the front porch! He'd come up there after the hop toads that sit under the bug zapper.... John

That's a good size timber rattler. I used to see them when I lived in the MO Ozarks, though I wasn't too worried (usually saw them fly fishing or hiking). They minded their own business most of the time. Not as many up here in West Central MO, but they do hang out in the right areas (rocks, cliffs, etc.).

Now, a copperhead is another story. As is a water moccasin (cottonmouth).

Pygmy, young one, plenty big for me. Second time post this pic. I have never seen a big rattler. Az, Ar, Nm, Tx, La, Wy, others, just lucky i guess.

I hate snakes... But these pics remind me of working in Central PA. I was working on a power line job,setting a pole one day. Just as we took the pole to the hole we dug I looked down and saw a rattler I was standing on, my partner ran off and I jumped in the air kinda backwards and came back to earth on top of another rattler. Then I took off a runnin` to catch up to my partner.After we started to breathe regular again we went back to the truck and folded up and got the HELL outa there.We ran over another rattler backing out to the road. Next day we were a little better prepped. 870 rem and S&W 38. Killed seven rattlers down that right away until we set the other four poles. I hate snakes.... Jeff

Is there such a thing as a smooth bore Judge? Seriously...I find them to pattern like crap! Obviously, one did get the job done but damn...I think a rifled bbl is the absolute worst possible option if a shot shell is the intended ammo for it. The pattern just blows all to pieces, with a hole in the middle of the pattern, even at very close ranges. A smooth cylinder bore would be way better for shot shell loads, IMHO. That's exactly why I'm not a fan of this gun. I've thought about buying one to ream the bbl smooth on, literally.

I've got a few rattlers in my neck of the woods but more copperheads than rattlers...and thankfully, not many of either. Kill all poisonous snakes and let the rest live..Just my 2 cents.

I don't think a smooth bore Judge or S&W Governor would be legal.

Talked to a friend of mine this afternoon. Told me his wife spent the last three days in ICU because a copperhead got her on the toe.
Said they thought she was gonna loose it for a day or so.

I'm not sure but I don't know why it wouldn't be. I'll defer to your point but I don't know why a smooth bore is not just a very, very shot out rifled barrel.

They're always changing the laws but in my years as a FFL, I don't recall ever seeing a law that would prohibit it. I may be wrong but I haven't seen it.

As I remember it being explained when I dealt in such matters the rifling keeps it from becoming classified as a short barreled shotgun.
I think that goes all the way back to when TC first started the .410 barrel for Contender pistols. Remember it had the choke to help make the .410 shot pattern better.
The fact that most of these can fire 45 Colt ammo too is pretty much a bonus.

I stepped on one once scouting deer in late summer years ago in Uwarrie national forest. I steeped off the trail to take a leak and felt a vibration under my foot. He was curled around biting at my boot. I should tell you 4 45 Colts from 4 feet in the air ( How far I jumped ) did him absolutely no good. Probably hit him with the first because the next 3 were fanned - fast - Hopalong style.
