I know a lot of men with really ugly wives but they still love them !! And most of them can't shoot worth a darn.. Savage is the exception 8) 8) 8) 8)

SAVAGE is Like a Scooter, Fun to ride but you don't want your friends to see.

Savages have the barrel nut, That is there claim to fame in the shooting sports.. I think with action overhauls, New barrels and custom stocks you can make an old Mauser shoot..I have skipped buying a Savage for recreational shooting and hunting cause they seem cheaper then most, the wood stocks I have seen in the past were made out of poplar and not to good for humidity or warping..I think as an amateur you should start your self out with the best shooting gun one can purchase, let the error be you and learn from it..

A nut is the only way to tighten a thread correctly ask any race engine builder. Now for the action if it is true and square to the bolt face that is all that is needed. Trigger is just the way to hold & release the firing pin. The stock isn't needed look at any rail gun. Having said all that the only thing left is the shooter. No machining or other devices will correct the shooter. Look at the result of all the major shoots. The same names always end up at the top. One thing I learned from semi pro stock car racing. ASA archery, ATA trap shooting now the long range shooting. Never judge a competitor on what he is using. Larry

The action acts as a de facto nut, and we're talking about rifles, not race engines. And it appears there's a mountain of data that indicates the best rifles with the best records in competition are built without a nut like the Savage features. But maybe they're all wrong, and were just lucky.

Fellow gear head here. I have to ask. "Semi Pro Stock Racing". Are you racing in Pro Stock or another class?

I raced local and built many cars. We raced the all pro kiss series won that. Then they started the Florida Pro series we won that. We raced with Rusty, Darrel, Mark Martin, Ed Howe, Joe Nemocheck The great Dick Trickle . The Florida Pro series tuned into the Hooter series. Larry

You and I both know it know its not the gun it is the shooter.... Thanks Larry

That's only partly true and you know it.

A perfect example to prove your "theory" wrong;
When I first shot 1K Williamsport BR competition, I took my Savage heavy barreled hunting rifle down to the shoot for fun. It shot anywhere from 15"-17" 10 shot groups at 1K. It would shoot ok for the first handful of rounds, but would start throwing fliers. Couldn't win a relay against the better built customs, but had a lot of fun just shooting.

I jumped on one of the other competitor's rifle (who is a current world record holder) for one of the relays using his 6 Dasher on a Stiller Viper action and Hart barrel. And guess what???...I couldn't make a decent 10 shot group with my Savage hunting rifle, but I posted a 6.066" 10 shot group to win the day with his Stiller custom rifle.

So your statement has a little bit of truth, but don't even try to convince us that "it's the shooter, not the rifle". Hogwash! ;)

I went to Williamsport also The winner shot 10 shots in 12 seconds and never looked down the scope. To me that isn't the shooter it all about the gun. I would of like to see how good he shot in 5 minutes. Building a machine is far different then having to aim. Just my thinking. Larry

You should talk to some of the current Williamsport world record holders about their hunting stories. Pretty amazing and verified to me by witnesses standing right there with them as they told it. Things like an antelope buck being taken at 1200 yards with a 6 Dasher, elk at the same distance with 338 Lapua, kill at 1049 yards with a 7 SAUM, etc...
Cold bore, no practice or warm up shots, just one shot, one kill. If that ain't aiming and knowing how to shoot, I don't know what is...

But hunting isn't a sanctioned competition event, kinda like your Savage gong shoot, so I guess those are not credible stories ;)

In all the years that I've ever seen a Savage rifle in the stores or advertised on the web, I have never been able to get past the looks. I guess from a purists standpoint, it doesn't have to matter much to him as long as it will shoot that tight target, or bag that critter. And I can relate with that practical aspect of firearms ownership too, being I don't care how ugly my carry pistols looks. But, as with most toys, I do it for the entertainment.....and for me I just can't get use to the looks of that rifle.

I ordered a Savage Target Action, and I agree, the looks are one thing I did not much care for. Getting used to it, but doubt it will ever become "attractive". Perhaps if I apply a camo finish to the entire thing, I can disguise it a bit!

Phil

Dang, tough crowd here! Good thing I'm not too hung up on looks and mainly care about tight groups. Incidentally, here's a pic snapped earlier today of a new Kreiger being fit to my *GASP* Savage PTA! LOL! ;) Several of my good shooting buddies make fun of my Savages and sometimes it almost makes me like Savages more. The kidding is all in good fun and no harm is intended.

I just like to shoot and a Savage is good enough for me...

Did they show you the pictures of their truck they shot from. Larry

Yep! And they could beat any one of your Savages at a " 1K gong shoot" while resting on any one of their truck windows! ;D

I ;Dwill take that bet any time

BigDMT, if you're saying they can consistently hit a 8" gong at 1k while using a pickup truck for a front rest (and no rear rest) - I would also like to place a wager. ;)

There MAY have been a little sarcasm in that statement...I'd actually have to bet against that feat as well ;D

You better watch out! Them Savages hold 1'' of vertical on those gongs. ;)
