Man, you guys with the Gucci rifles are showing a little insecurity, Savages shoot very well out of the box, in my experience (Win, Rem, and Savage) it shoots way better than the other out of the box rifles. I own a Gucci or two but I also own 4 Savages, all 4 cost less than my cheapest Gucci rifle. The savages out of the box hold their own, plus they look more manly than thos slick wanna be fufu customs.

I'm sure it's a set tru.

Could you explain? Ive never heard of this.

It's a scroll 6 jaw chuck. But the chuck also has 4 independent jack screws that you can use to index the entire chuck and also anything the chuck is holding.

Or maybe his 6 jaw is a scroll chuck and he uses one of these to indicate the barrels.

Isn't a master piece something you put over a fire place. I know where you live not many has one. Till you get one just keep kicking us around with your ugly Savage. That 10 shot Group was amazing. See you Saturday, you know you can stay home and I mite Place Larry

after i get home . ok tonight we will switch this to how accurate my M1 can be

Yes, please. This Savage thread is old and tired, even compared to rifle designs from pre-WWI and WWII. I'm serious! 8)

Here's a question. The Savage action has been around a long time. Back in the earlier days of br when a accurized Remington was standard why wasn't an accurized Savage standard? I believe benchrest, especially point blank is the shooting sport that demands the most precision from the equipment. I look to them to see what works. I don't recall seeing too many Savages in that circle. They seem to hold their own in other disciplines that have other variables that make pure accuracy less important.

Probably because Mike Walker (RIP) worked for Remington. He helped develop benchrest-winning shooting systems -- action, trigger, barrel, cartridge design, bullet design/manufacture.

There's nothing magic about a Remington action. They are light (to help meet the LV weight limit with a max heavy barrel) and round (easily sleeved), with a good ignition system. But, as you point out, none of those characteristics are unique to Remington. Mike Walker was unique, though.

I believe that the primary issue with Savage with regard to its suitability for short range benchrest is the trigger. Remington compatible triggers that can be adjusted down to very light pull weights have been available for many years. The same cannot be said for Savage actions. Beyond that, I do not think that there is any advantage of one over the other, except for the floating bolt head, which I believe gives very slightly better results than a fixed one. I say this because of a conversation with one custom action maker and his experience with some test actions that were made that way, and used for benchrest. Their lug contact was so good that it made keeping grease on the lugs more of an issue, requiring more attention, but there was a slight but perceptible advantage in accuracy. I will say that if, like many of us, one's rifle budget is limited, that building what has worked well for others is undoubtedly a safer course, since there are plenty of other challenges to be met that cannot so easily be disposed of.
