Back in '08 I was shooting Manatee, it was an informal paper shoot at 1000 yards. I was shooting my 6MM Competition Match Tac rifle, Larry was shooting his .260AI. They were 5 shot group for size. I new I had an okay group, it was just under 4.5", Larry had a 3 5/16" group. Later that morning when the paper shoot was over I shot a 10 shoot group with the same rifle just under 4.5" again. Since then the shooters and the rifles have evolved down there. Just because those guys are shooting an 8" gong don't let that fool you, they have those Savage's and Dashers shooting small.

Last week was another savage day light gun best Ag 20 shots 8.432 small group 5.346. I was the only heavy gun. My 20 shot Ag 8.174. We also make them shoot on paper. Larry

have 3 Savage rifles, 2 that have after market barrels (wild cats) and 1 factory. One has SSS competition trigger, factory gun is LRP so has the Target trigger. All 3 are fun to shoot, but also have Stiller switch barrel with a jewel trigger and all I can say is wish I could get jewel for the Savage builds.

The plus for the Savage is I was able to build rifles I would not have had without the ability to change barrels, plus like to tinker with the rifles and they have been good (and safe) for that purpose. Get to shoot a lot more and different calibers than if I did not have them. For those that like em, I understand for those that don't - well that is what choice is all about. Not everyone can afford the custom build, but I do hope most that want one can one day.

I too am a big savage fan. ive never had a issue one with a savage trigger. I put sss triggers in mine and are done with it. I have a F/TR now that I think is great and its a factory rifle. the whole savages are cheap made, ive never seen any difference from it to a Remington. everybody makes a lowend rifle. id pick a stevens 200 or axis over a 770 any day and twice on sunday. if you want a custom action barrel and stock so be it, but but if your shooting for money youll still see savages. a buddy at work is Warren Dean. hes a team usa shooter. he shoots a savage palma

In all the years that I've ever seen a Savage rifle in the stores or advertised on the web, I have never been able to get past the looks. I guess from a purists standpoint, it doesn't have to matter much to him as long as it will shoot that tight target, or bag that critter. And I can relate with that practical aspect of firearms ownership too, being I don't care how ugly my carry pistols looks. But, as with most toys, I do it for the entertainment.....and for me I just can't get use to the looks of that rifle.

i shoot a savage sorry to say. this was the best thing i read all week. dont call me a liberal its all you bloody liberals that keep taking all my money so i cant afford a bat yet

I ordered a Savage Target Action, and I agree, the looks are one thing I did not much care for. Getting used to it, but doubt it will ever become "attractive". Perhaps if I apply a camo finish to the entire thing, I can disguise it a bit!

ya know, that particular action doesn't look that bad if you flute the bolt body, put on a tactical bolt handle, and thread the barrel up like a 700 without a barrel nut. Then the only ugly part left is the bolt shroud.

That's what I did to the one I had and it actually looked pretty good. Oh, and polished off all that stupid warning label about the target trigger.

Savage actions also look pretty good if you camouflage them with a towel, a sheet, or even a pile of dirt. ;)

Man, I really hope you guys have a sense of humor! ;D

Erik, I was about to ask you if I could buy one of your tuners. But I guess you wouldn't want it seen on a Savage. :(

It doesn't go on the Savage, it goes on the barrel. ;)

I said that I hoped you guys had a sense of humor, and aparently I'm testing yours Bill.

In case you haven't noticed, I just say those things because some of you get really bothered. I'll tell yo what Bill, since I appreciate your friendship, I'll try to quit making fun of Savage and I'll only try to post comments that will help based on my experience with them.

FYI, I'm a recent owner of a Savage PTA action. I bough one from a friend of mine, not to use but mainly so I can take it apart and see how they work and see if I can improve them in any way. I also had an idea to make barrel swaps super easy but the floating bolt head might cause a problem.

Have a good night Bill and stay warm.

Actually, I was just kidding you back, Erik. ;)

Speaking of bolt heads. I changed mine on my PTA last summer. And that changed the headspace by .003". Fortunately, since I use the barrel nut, all I had to do was screw the barrel out a little and lock the nut back down.
For ease of barrel swaps, I make a witness mark on the underside of the barrel after it is properly headspaced with a go gauge. The next time the barrel goes on (I swap barrels at least twice a year), I screw it on until it contacts the go gauge or fired brass, then line up the witness mark. I can do a barrel swap in fifteen minutes - on a picnic table. :D

That's funny. ;D

Ok, I don't know about you, but I promise to refrain from making any more mean comments or be laughing at the jokes about this American Motors Pacer of a rifle. (Ooops....there I go again. I must have Tourette's.)

Less then half were savage. The winner had a ugly savage with a Mc gowen barrel. Mine was a 7.5 twist Krieger. Third made his own barrel 4th had another after market barrel.
Shooting a steel 8'' gong at 1015 yds is very hard. I believe your 10 ring is 10'' our steel is almost 50% smaller. We only get two scores X or O.. In practice and my first 5 shot I had my personal best 17x.A half hr later 4 O and one X . Being 74 I love to still be competitive. And doing it with a ugly savage makes it more fun. You and I both know it know its not the gun it is the shooter. Keep the pot stirred. Savage isn't dead yet. Thanks Larry
