Phil3,
Touch a Jewell trigger set at 4 oz. and cycle the bolt on a BAT, Lawton, Defiance, Stiller Viper, or Panda action and all your questions about quality comparison will be answered ;)

You are right on one point. The bolt lift on the Savage target action is NO better than any other "run of the mill" factory action. Therefor, I believe it is priced fairly.

I have custom actions, and I have factory actions. To say that one is not the other is obvious. This does not mean that the factory actions do not serve their intended purpose very well. They do, and I have never missed a shot in the field because of the difference, so the question becomes, how important that difference is, for a particular application. Of course for sanctioned benchrest competition, I believe that the difference can be significant. All of this pales into insignificance, at least for a few days, after one has had a surgeon go looking for a kidney stone, and conclude that it must have passed. Thank goodness for Norco.

There are two types of shooters, those that have been beaten by anything and everything, and those that will.

Not if you don't compete...

When you can cycle a very nicely timed Rem 700 with one finger and thumb using a PTG custom bolt and Jewell trigger set at a very crisp and SAFE 4 oz......... Man, oh man... It just makes you want to get rid of all your Savage rifles.... And that's exactly what I did ;D

When I cycle my timed Model 12 with one finger and thumb using a extended bolt knob like my Panda and the Rifle Basix Sav-2 set at a very safe and crips 10 oz........Man, oh man.......Plus the right bolt left port (superior to anything Rem has on the market).

LOL, all just Ford vrs Chevy.

A timed Savage target action feels every bit as good and light as my Panda. Just gotta find the right smith.

Is the PTA as good as my Panda Not even close, but it was 1/2 the price even with the timing and bolt work.

BigDMT,

I like my Ruger's and my favorite gun to hunt with is a Ruger. I have had good luck with a couple target models and a #1..Could be because my first rifle was a Ruger in 7 RM.

I have cycled a few action and thought the Borden action was the best IMHO.

correct. That's why I said a person would want to put extra money into it for better timing. But it also needs to be trued, and the lugs need to be lapped, and it needs a new trigger... So for the price...the Savage is a very good action if you can be happy and just leave it the way it comes.

If you want to put all the extra money into a Savage Target Action, a person would be much the wiser to buy a Shilen action so you can use the same barrels, but have the huge advantage of hanging a Jewell trigger.

the trigger is the main reason I chose savage over all others
IMHO the are best 2 stage trigger made
undoubtedly safer
and much better design than Hubers-jewels -timney
& without a doubt less expensive

Interesting thread......

My first, and current, rifle is a Savage, with a after market barrel, trigger and stock. It will shoot .5 MOA consistently, and in the .3s out to 300, beyond that i cant say if it is me or the rifle.....

All that being said, my F-TR build will be on a BAT, but my next hunting build, in 300win mag or WSM, will be a Savage, so i can do more of the work myself

If this was April 1st, I would understand this post.

Perhaps you may have overlooked one two stage option.

+1 LOL! ;D

I have built several savages over the last few years and love them.
For a lot of us a savage with a nice hand lapped barrel and a Sav-2 trigger is a first taste of accuracy beyond a hunting rifle. For some this will be enough. For others it is a first step that eventually leads to a search for even more accuracy. I am in the process of selling a few of the savages I built.
I recently acquired a Viper action with a Jewel trigger that I have a new krieger barrel for.
I'm sure I will keep a couple savages for hunting. But the ones I built for competition will be going.
Im moving on up

I like that, moving on up. ;D I have a Hall action in 6CM (Competition Match) The rest of my rifles are Savage actions and shoot quite well. They are not as smooth as the Hall. I bought a 6BR off here this year in a Low-Boy PR&T stock, Savage PTA action, have not squeezed the trigger on it yet. Also have a NEW in the box Savage PTA that I thought I had to have. ::) My next rifle may be a complete custom, not sure yet. I like my Savage's. ;) Thanks Boyd on the reply about the Shilen action.
