Favorite 6mm bullet for deer.

Hi 40x guy, I was hoping someone would talk about the Barnes bullets. I tried some years ago but couldn’t get very good accuracy from them. Have they straightened out that problem?
How is the accuracy with your son's rifle. What kind of groups does he get at 2 and 300 yards?
I have always thought the Barnes bullets showed great penetration possibilities. Do you get complete penetration on lung shot deer every time ?

I do not know if they ever had a problem with accuracy issues. Of course we know all rifles are different and some may need more load development time invested in them.
Accuracy at 100 yards in sons rifle is excellent and 5 shots can be pretty much covered with a quarter. (Rock Creek barrel finished at 22 inch with .243 match chamber) Have never shot it on paper at 200 or further. We sight it in about half inch high at 100 and last year he shot a nice big doe at 200 yards with one shot and deer folded up on impact. This bullet does achieve complete penetration and IMO is one of the best deer bullets out there. I use the Barnes TTSX bullets in both my .270 and .308 hunting rigs as well.

I've loaded 3 different bullets for my sons 243 on whitetails
100gr Remington Core Lokt, 100gr Hornady SP and 100gr Sierra Game Kings

The Remingtons performed the best. Good penetration and expansion but held together well
The Hornadys held together well also, but didn't seem to have the shock as the Remingtons
Sierras came apart quickly and did not penetrate like we wanted.

BTW, if anyone has any 100 Core Lokts, I'm looking for some

Well it looks like I am going to stay with Nosler Partitions!
They might not be the most accurate bullet but so far they do exactly what I want them to do, most of the time.

I went to the Berger web site last night and looked at there hunting versions. Right on the web site it says these bullets are designed to go in 5 inches or so and then literally come apart and do the shrapnel thing . That's the last kind of bullet I ever want to use.

I was hoping that Barnes had figured out some problems they had with there 6mm penetrating type bullets, but a visit to there web site last night was a waste, they don't carry that type anymore in 6mm.

Thanks to all for there input. I was hoping that over the years a new and exciting penetrating bullet had been designed.
However, Bob Nosler seems to have designed the "Partition" projectile right so many years ago.

Most of my shots are 100 yards or less these days and I get great performance with the 95gNbt.For longer shots I like the 100g Sgk.

Barnes TTSX if you are in a lead-free zone. These work VERY well. There were bad experiences with a lot of folks who tried them - but that was before many found they would shoot as good (or better) than lead once you took the time and got it dialed in to your rifle. Frankly, I would use this bullet when hunting in a lead zone as well. I use them also in my .257 Roberts, 6.5 Grendel, 7mm Mag and .375 H&H. Accuracy and performance.

As soon as I can get a hold of some, I am going to try the Speer Deepcurl 90g. They are bonded by electroplate, you can't seperate the the copper from the lead if you tried.

I shoot a 6x47 lapua and killed many deer with 70 gr sierra blitzking at 3600fps! Of course you have to have decent shot placement, but that's true of any bullet.

I prefer the Sierra 100 gr Pro Hunter with IMR 4350 but the Sierra 85gr HPBT with IMR 4064 is very versatile and is a classic.

Although I have said and done kill a lot with the 85gr Partition bullet I feel it is a smidgen to light. It works well, but why not use something that is "Fail safe" relative to penetration on LARGE deer like the 95/100 gr partition?
It just makes good sense to ensure as humane a kill as one can, and if things go wrong be able to track the wounded animal through a complete penetration type projectile where it bleeds out well for tracking.

Think about it.

Hi Kermit. Are you getting complete pass troughs on your deer? What is the average buck size in your area (weight)?

Our bucks are around 125 - 175.
Some have been around 200 but that's a big'in.
The thing about the Accubonds is it doesn't seem to
matter what cal., they all seem to have pass throughs.
And on yotes, they just fold up and the exits are about
3/4". My oldest son (14) hunts with a 264 Win Mag and
uses the 130's . We LOVE'EM...

I use the 75g Vmax in my 243wssm. DRT kills out to 400 yds so far. At least on deer in the 140 lb size. There pretty small around here.

After thinking about the Nosler Accubond bullets that a lot have recommended I went over to the Nosler web site and read about them, I will have to admit they look interesting.

While there I noticed a New (to me) Nosler projectile called the Accubond LR, I don't know if you guys have seen it are not, but this was really interesting!

The LR stands for LONG RANGE and looked like something i would really like to try!

Unfortunately it is NOT available in 6mm projectiles!!! Why I have no idea!
But for those using larger calibers I think it is really worth a look!

Going to shoot 105 bvld's this fall on mule deer and antelope. At 100 yds. 1/4 moa. Shot at 300 yds. today 1/2 moa. maybe a little better off of Harris bipod's. Also shot at 600 yds. for f-class and kept it about a 198 average. Fun to shoot, easy to shoot, and easy to load. Now will it kill! Plus no recoil so to speak.

Been using the Nosler 95 partition of 30 years also. Lost one doe to scope problem and a fog bank. Found it a few days later. Ranges from 25 yds to 300 yds. Ive never recovered a bullet, always had full penetration and a good drain hole on the offside. Even with broken shoulders and angling shots. Im using Barnes in most serious loads in other calibers, but Iv got a few hundred of the 6mm 95s, and have no reason to change.
