6mm Bullet for Deer this fall

We have killed a lot of deer and hogs with the Hornady 100g spt and btsp, very accurate bullet and tough. 200+ lb Kansas bucks with a load of approx. 41g of IMR 4350 with a win or 9 1/2 primer is very accurate in my rem 700's.

The 95g partition is good from all angles, coming and going, but not quiet the blood trail of the 100g hornadys. Many large Nebraska and Kansas bucks at ranges from 40 yards to 400 yards died instantly with a max load of IMR 4831 and a 9 1/2 and 41.5-43g of IMR 4350, with a pretty good jump to the lands(barrels with a lot of wear take a tad more powder). The 95g Hornady sst is a tough bullet also, much more so than the 95g nosler ballistic tip.

For antelope, we shot the 85g Speer btsp with it's bc of .401 and it is a designated deer bullet, NOT a varmint bullet. We shot a hot load of IMR 4831 and later on R#19 with this bullet, fast with accuracy.

If I had to choose one bullet, it would be the 100g Hornady, and I would go on a mad dog hunt for the flat base version, this is a poor man's partition if there ever was such a thing.

I was interested to read your comment regarding the 95 gr. SST. I have shied away from the SSTs because of my experience with other calibers - they seemed too lightly constructed for medium game when driven at high velocity, delivered a lot of bloodshot meat and tended not to exit. Admittedly, I have not shot a great many of them and I may have been hasty in my assessment. Have you found them reliable on shoulder shots and quartering angles? I like the numbers on the 95. I may have to give them a look.

The 95g SST is tough, I have a friend in New Zealand that refuses to use any other bullet on those large deer they have down there.

If you do not like blood shot meat and quartering shots through the shoulders and hips, this spells Nosler 95g Partitions real loud, and we shot a lot of big deer over 200 lbs with them, they never fail, but do not leave the blood trail of some other bullets. I shot cow elk with the 95g partitions, no problems.

We have shot a few with the 80g tipped triple shock in Rem 700's, they work very well and a few with the non tipped triple shock, usually without a blood trail.

Our two favorites are the 100g Hornady and the 95g partition, and IMR 4350 with either will get you super accuracy with speed in our 700's.

I am told that R#26 with a hot primer will get another 150 fps.

The 6mm Remington will shoot the 80g tipped triple shocks over 3600 with great accuracy.

Thanks Ackleyman!

I have used the SST and 100 grain bthp Hornady for years. Unless they wear kevlar vest any heavy for caliber hunting bullet will work great.

Geez am I the only one that likes the Speer 100gr Grand Slam ?

For farther shots I like the 100gr Sierra GameKing SPBT, but with the 100gr Speer GS I'm confident out to 500 as long as I have a steady shot.

243win 22" bbl 7lb rifle.

I like the Grand Slam because it will hold together at very close encounters in the 243win and works nicely farther out too. My hunting habitat is mostly bush where a 50 yard shot is far but last year I found open air where 800+ yards is possible and might work with a different bullet if need be.

I raised seven kids who all shot their first deer and several others with partitions and 243s. The shot placement on some of those deer was marginal at best but we never lost a deer. The performance of the bullet was consistent, lots of damage, lots of penetration. Even though the partition is an old fashion kind of bullet, the accuracy was top notch from multiple rifles. Great bullets for deer.

My Jr. PETA members have piled up quite a few very large northern whitetail does over the years at 500 yards with either a Dasher or 6-47L with either the Berger 105 VLD or the 108 BT. We go for the behind the shoulder heart shot and get the 50 yard "death run" before pileup. Always extensive damage to the innards!!

I'm jealous, never got a chance to try those.

I've only shot them a few times but it was in a 8" twist. I have 1-7.5" and a 1-7.75" twist barrels being chambered in the next couple of weeks so I will revisit the 117's.

If you ever want to let some go, let me know.
