Factory 6mm Benchrest Rifles

I have seen one shoot 3in at 1000 in a 6br and 6.5 284 shoot 4in. Go to IBS results under hawks ridge 8 or 9 out of 10 in factory class is savage

I was looking at the Savage as well. I was looking for a gun that I don't solely have to use on a bench though. Can the stock be swapped for a McMillan or something similar? I am looking for a gun I can do long range shooting and also hunt with in 6BR.

Go to savage web site they made a 6br in HS presicion called varmint single shot 26in barrel don't know if they still make it but you can still find them on gunbroker

Sako built some very accurate 6 PPCs. They are hard to find but will shoot with any factory gun. I have one (a model 75 SS varmit 6 PPC) that shoots in the .2s without much trouble and will get into the .1s occasionally. A member was selling one for a friend on this site a while back. Accuflite Arms Inc. had a few that were new in the box. The set triggers are nearly impossible to find now though.

I bought an F Class 6BR Savage 6 years ago, and shoot 300 and 600 yard matches with it. I've since bought another Target action, and have several aftermarket barrels, including Shilen, Criterion and X-Caliber.

Based on your desire to hunt with this rifle, and to be able to stick with a "factory" format, my suggestion would be to look into the 6.5 Creedmoor.

The bull barrels of the Savage would making toting them around for hunting difficult. I guess you could check Northland Shooters and see if you could buy large shank barrels in other contours.

Just some thoughts....let us know which direction you go.....

HS or LRPV stocks are drop in and are more accurate than the laminated wood BR stocks. Difference is the aluminum V block vs a U channel that is too wide. I cut some 1/32in thick (credit card) plastic strips (1/8" wide by 3"long) and wedged them on either side of the action in the wood stocks. Groups immediately shrunk from .5in to .25in.

I have glass bedded actions into wood and aluminum based H-S Stocks, and I see no difference (if it is done properly).

When I hunt, I find a good spot where I have good shooting lanes and can see in all directions. I usually hunt in open grasslands with trees located sparsely throughout the land. I've thought about getting a ghillie suit and laying prone on a hill. :)

Have you worked with the Savage LRPV? It looks like a decent gun. The more I research, I'm trying to decide between 6BR or 6.5x47 Lapua. I know the initial cost of the 6.5x47 Lapua is pretty high, but I've heard of guys getting 20 reloads out of the brass.

I have not worked with the Savage - I am not fond of Savages. Just a personal predjudce.

The Lapua is the biggest bargain you can find - if you know how to manage headspace, 40 reloads is easy peasy.

Glass bedding would definitely help both, especially the wood stock. The best system is their accustock, but they don't offer it on their most accurate guns except for the 10/110BA. Go figure.

A used LRPV can be had for under $1,000 and is a bargain at that price. I own several and they are all sub .5 moa out of the box. I stopped counting reloads of my Lapua 6BR and 6.5x47 brass at 50. The stuff lasts forever and I run them both hot.
Caliber depends on intended purpose. 6BR for 600 yards or less, 6.5x47 for 1000.
Since I discovered the Model 12, I haven't even thought about buying anything else.

I guess I'll need to acquire parts and get a 6.5x47 Lapua built. I have read articles where guys have gotten 3,000rds out of their barrels and it was still accurate and the fact that the brass can handle 20 reloads is phenomenal.
