Does anyone, except Savage, chamber a factory rifle in 6 mm Benchrest?
Dont discount the Savage, I seen those rifles shoot some pretty dam good scores at 600 yards.Does anyone, except Savage, chamber a factory rifle in 6 mm Benchrest?
They will shoot 5" groups at 600 any day, 3" at 600 most days, and 2" if tuned and shot well.Dont discount the Savage, I seen those rifles shoot some pretty dam good scores at 600 yards.
I was looking at the Savage as well. I was looking for a gun that I don't solely have to use on a bench though. Can the stock be swapped for a McMillan or something similar? I am looking for a gun I can do long range shooting and also hunt with in 6BR.

HS or LRPV stocks are drop in and are more accurate than the laminated wood BR stocks. Difference is the aluminum V block vs a U channel that is too wide. I cut some 1/32in thick (credit card) plastic strips (1/8" wide by 3"long) and wedged them on either side of the action in the wood stocks. Groups immediately shrunk from .5in to .25in.
When I hunt, I find a good spot where I have good shooting lanes and can see in all directions. I usually hunt in open grasslands with trees located sparsely throughout the land. I've thought about getting a ghillie suit and laying prone on a hill.I bought an F Class 6BR Savage 6 years ago, and shoot 300 and 600 yard matches with it. I've since bought another Target action, and have several aftermarket barrels, including Shilen, Criterion and X-Caliber.
Based on your desire to hunt with this rifle, and to be able to stick with a "factory" format, my suggestion would be to look into the 6.5 Creedmoor.
The bull barrels of the Savage would making toting them around for hunting difficult. I guess you could check Northland Shooters and see if you could buy large shank barrels in other contours.
Just some thoughts....let us know which direction you go.....

Have you worked with the Savage LRPV? It looks like a decent gun. The more I research, I'm trying to decide between 6BR or 6.5x47 Lapua. I know the initial cost of the 6.5x47 Lapua is pretty high, but I've heard of guys getting 20 reloads out of the brass.I have glass bedded actions into wood and aluminum based H-S Stocks, and I see no difference (if it is done properly).

What kind of action would I need for one?I have not worked with the Savage - I am not fond of Savages. Just a personal predjudce.
The Lapua is the biggest bargain you can find - 20 reloads is easy peasy.

I guess I'll need to acquire parts and get a 6.5x47 Lapua built. I have read articles where guys have gotten 3,000rds out of their barrels and it was still accurate and the fact that the brass can handle 20 reloads is phenomenal.Glass bedding would definitely help both, especially the wood stock. The best system is their accustock, but they don't offer it on their most accurate guns except for the 10/110BA. Go figure.
