Savage 12 Benchrest 6BR

I sold my F/TR Savage in 308 in order to “upgrade”. I may regret it, but I doubt it.
It had won a few matches. It made more than one local loud mouth have a piece of humble pie, though they dropped a fair amount on a solid rig they hadn’t the knowledge to use it well.

It doesn't really count as "building your own" unless you cut the chamber, thread the tenon, and crown the barrel yourself.... ;)
If you want to call it home built you need to forge the receiver and the barrel while you cut down the tree and mill the stock, otherwise its not a home built.

I LOVE THAT PART!! :p
Reminds me of the Guys "out shooting" the rifle Guys with an SP. ;)
When someone shows up with "something different", best to keep your mouth shut and maybe learn something new. And when the "something new or different" shows up, my bet it the Guy bringing it has a pretty good idea what it will do.

I understand what you’re saying and appreciate your knowledge . None of my rifles have ever been to a gunsmith and it’s a good feeling smithing your own rifle . It really feels like your own . I don’t want someone building it for me because in my mind it’s THEIR rifle . It’s like the guy that builds his own race car , there’s a lot of pride involved that you’ve done it yourself .
Yes there is, and personally I see nothing wrong with gathering parts and pieces and assembling yourself. At the end of the day Lr bench rest is a tuners game.

And where is this written ? Lol . I’m happy enough when a guy with too much money has this 10k custom , sees me changing a barrel at the range and comes over and says “ How do u set headspace” ? Lol

My barrel is one of the first year 1-12 barrels on a LRPV. I am guessing that it had a box of shells through it when I bought it years ago because the gun shop I bought it from said the guy that bought it said it shot horribly. I am guessing that he was using 107 grain bullets. I have hardly shot it because the early 1-12 barrels probably have to jump close to .300 before the bullets touch, seriously. I loaded up some 80 grain Bergers and VV140 last week and shot a .430 5 shot group. It's going out to Kevin Rayhill to set back the chamber and time and true, because I think the factory barrel has potential. I sure would shoot it before you give up on the factory barrel.

Hey guys !

In the past I’ve bought Savage actions and pre fit custom barrels and HS stocks and have done fairly well . So this time I couldn’t find a new target action or Benchrest stock so decided to buy Savage 12 Benchrest in 6BR . I’ve got a pre fit ordered , but just wondered what everybody opinion is on using the Savage 29” bull factory barrel for match’s . These are local match’s , but these guys are pretty good and most have full blown custom guns . I know the factory barrels can be copper mines and a bitch to clean , but what about accuracy wise . Anybody out there using Savage factory bull for competition?

Thx

Mark
I can speak for the factory barrel in this respect,
I originally had put a factory 6br barrel on my 308 which was forwarded by buddy which in turn was originally forwarded to him. I could not tell you if this made a different but Sierra 6mm 107MK Molly bullets were used from day 1 all the way through my use until I forwarded it to another user. At the time I finished with it, it had just over 4000 rounds and was still a tight shooter. I too won several matches with this barrel. Hold on to that factory barrel for a rainy day or, run it out and then replace with the profit. I know many other individuals running factory 6br's that are crushin' it. As a matter of fact, I was using the same Lapua brass which was handed off as well. Not gospel, just my 2c.

My Criterion pre fit is being delivered today but you guys got me excited about the factory barrel. So I’m all loaded up for Saturday (left bullets long till I can measure lands on new barrel) . 80 Berger’s as well .

After making your own steel and planting the tree........
Well im looking for some iron ore and thinking about how to make a scope reticle. Maybe a whisker from a mountain Lion ;)

If I can stop laughing long enough that is..

I shot my first 2 seasons with a factory Savage F-class in 6br and did quite well which set the hook deep for me. I have since switched to a used custom but that rifle did very well against many high dollar customs. Here's a pic of my best target in a match at 1k with that factory Savage barrel.View attachment 1289046
Just got rifle . They must use zero freebore reamer. Distance to lands was almost .1 less than my Shilen and Criterion pre fits

I agree with SPJ, it's a tuners game. I have done pretty well in local matches with factory Savage rifles with both stock and custom barrels. I think a top tier barrel just simply reduces the amount of time/supplies to find that tune.
We have a younger guy in our club shooting 300yd matches with a fricken Cabela's/Savage 308 and he's got it dialed in shooting well under an inch with it.

My Model 12 Benchrest shot a lot of .1, .2 and mostly .3s all the up til about 600 rounds or so before it took a lot of cleaning to keep it going. Installed a Critorian and never looked back. I have three target action rifles now. Before I bought the first one, the second one and the third one I looked for used customs. $100 to 200 more than a Savage. I wish. Everything I found was almost double the price of a Savage. I am an old dude. All my shooters shoot better than I can drive them.

Shot the factory barrel . Had a hard time getting cases to fit factory chamber . Did you need a small base die ? I thought it was headspace at first but now I see a case where the head has expanded doesn’t want to chamber .
