F-Class now has it's own Rules Book (2024)

Sounds like micromanagement or so called government over reach ( even though government isn't involved)
I wonder after a year of using some of these new rules how many will be changed.
Just cause it sounds like a good rule to some ( governing body). It might end up hindering the sport in the short and term.

Nailed it, Danny!! :)
Warren and Danny as guys who have been around F-Class since its inception and know what was intended and where it has gone in the US do a majority of people free recoil or not? Just asking as a MD (I shoot sling) because my definition of what is may not be what the community considers so just curious.

I realize none of these are new rules its just people are now aware of rules that have always been in there. Free recoil has NEVER been allowed per rule.

The pistol grip reference was to sling shooting.

Heman,
It's impossible to give it a number but I have seen several that free recoil their rifles. Mostly Open guys but a few FTR guys as well.

As a sometime RO at the SWN and FCNC in Phoenix, I really don't want to have to watch every shooter to police their adherence to the rules concerning free recoil. I would like to think that my fellow competitors would just abide by the rules as they exist and life would be simpler for all concerned.

If there are going to be rules, they need to be followed. If no one is willing to enforce them then why have them? I am very much in favor of comprehensive rules we have for F Class. While some will fuss about it being overreach or micromanaging or whatever, the problem with all the rules begins with the some shooters pushing the envelope a little too far. Then somebody has to write a new rule to fix that and so on and so forth.

In the end, the rules are written to protect the shooter and the integrity of the discipline.

Not really...why, way back in 2012 or so, I recall this same discussion occurring on this forum when a ban on "free recoil" was realized residing in the rules for F-Class competition and was being bantered around by forum members. It's nothing new for me. It's been the rule for quite some time!

(Could be the reason some of the forum members have drug out their "popcorn munching" comics!)
We need a popcorn munching emoji on the like button.

Fortunately the F-Class matches at the club where I shoot are held under CMP rules.
Although I am a lifetime member of the NRA I am no longer a fan of the organization. They wont get another dime out of me until they get back the $17 million that King Wayne walked away with.
Just what does the OPEN in F-Open stand for? The NRAs rules are as outdated as the organization. All of the NRA rules are based upon high power competition with military rifles and iron sights. They still use the big black target center that was designed way back when for iron sights. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against high power competition for those that choose that shooting discipline. The benchrest organizations have their act together because they are run by actual shooters. As far as I am concerned the NRA is more of a political lobbying organization than an actual shooting organization (and a corrupt one at that).
The only thing lower on my list than the NRA is the NY DA. Then again maybe the NY DA inadvertently did the honest NRA members a favor. Wouldn’t it be great if the NRA actually got their act together as far as a legitimate board and relevant rules committees made up of actual shooters.

And here all of the years you've been posting that popcorn meme, I always thought that you just really, really, REALLY liked popcorn. In fact, I envisioned your home with popcorn-themed decorations everywhere. I envisioned boxes of popcorn-flavored breakfast cereal, and popcorn desserts. I envisioned popcorn-flavored steaks sizzling on the grill. I envisioned popcorn-based yule logs crackling on the fire at Christmas time. I envisioned popcorn recycling plants, and popcorn-based ethanol fuel additives. I even envisioned homes built from recycled popcorn as a sustainable building material. I have to say, the actual truth is somewhat disappointing. ;)

The topic of free recoil isn't new, as Danny and a few others noted. The fact is, free recoil is not an easy matter to police. Unless one were shooting with a clear inch or two of space between their shoulder and the buttstock, it would be difficult to prove they were doing anything against the rules. Nonetheless, it might just be possible in this day and age of the ubiquitous cell phone camera that someone that wanted to register a complain about "free recoil" shooting might actually have a picture to go with their complaint. I can't imagine that a match official would be able to do much about such a complaint without some sort of evidence that it was actually happening.

You and Warren are the bookends of the AS spectrum. I love both of your styles. Until today, I assumed Warren operated under the presumption that a 140 character maximum rule applied to posts here, and that where possible, pictograms are actually the preferred mode of communication.

Further, said pictograms boil down to conveying a few core sentiments, such as: slow down there, buckaroo; I find you amusing; oh, is that so; trust me, I know a whole lot more about this subject than I’m letting on; and, cold, sorry, no, you’re getting cooolder ;). Warren is the rubber bumper that smacks wandering pin balls.

Ned, your posts on the other hand use words so as, that when AI is fully exploited, an eternal, digital Ned Ludd will spring forth on the interweb with literally no logical gaps unfilled. Your words rival the numerosity of individual subcomponents in DNA strands, creating the possibility of an AI program the resolution of which is so complete and infallible even you could not discern which side of a putative conversation originated with you, versus it. You are the opposite of the proverbial professor who hides the ball, The only verbal endeavor that would not come naturally is authoring Cliff’s Notes.

Thoroughly appreciate you guys.

The free recoil rule is so strange to me. I do not believe that was the original intent. Free recoil is still shoulder fired, unlike the Creedmoor position. But why is the shoulder the only body part of concern? You dont have to touch the rifle with any part of the body except the shoulder and trigger finger? Why stop at the shoulder? Its a ridiculous rule not just because of the intent but the enforceability. Free recoil is just a tiny gap between your shoulder and stock. So small you cant see the difference. Your shirt takes up the gap. You cant tell if a shooter is shooting free recoil by looking at them.

Exactly my point! So many doing for so long and the gap between shoulder and butt so small, I see lots of potential bitchin.

That's some funny stuff, David. I normally adhere to a laconic form of communicating for the most part but occasionally I blather on a bit. :)
