Erik--Back on 8/11/2013 you stated to me on this site that you know for sure that base to ogive and bearing surface measurements on bullets don't matter. I read above that you are to market a gauge to do these things. Did you change your mind?

The tool I have measures bullet base to ogive, bearing surface, and loaded round base to ogive. I personally only use it to measure loaded round base to ogive at the moment, but I will do testing to see if bearing surface has influence in accuracy at 1,000 yards. I still believe bullet base to ogive sorting does not matter, but I will test as well.

I assumed you had already did testing before you stated that you knew for sure bearing surface and bullet base to ogive did not matter.

Erik-Looking back at the old post 8/11/2013, if I'm not mistaken it says you did testing. and you knew for sure it did
n't matter.

I did testing, and in the range of testing that I did, it did not matter. I will sort a large amount of bullets and try to find a big enough variance to see if that makes a difference. I have tested up to .003" variance with no difference, I will see if it makes a difference when the difference is more than .003"

Erik .003 you may not see a Difference but when you come across some that are .030 difference like I have! You will see a difference. The only reason Long Range Shooters sort bullets by B.S. or Base to Ogive is to weed out the bad ones. Same thing with weighing Primers or Cases. Would you put one in your record group that was .030 out. And the other Measurement you want to make sure you have right and don't want to mix at Long Range is DIAMETER That is a biggy.

Everything matters to a point. Just depends on how small you are trying to shoot. I sort base to ogive using the Hoover trimmer with a caliper attached. His tool is extremely consistent due to the dual diameters rather than a taper in the comparator.

Thank you Joe, that explain why I never have seen an improvement when sorting base to ogive, but I will try to find a few extremes and shoot them to see how they behave.

Erik and Z When you go through thousands of rounds sooner or later when you change Lot#'s you will find that big change like I did last season. But once I make the change too the fat bullets the rifle was fine with them. It is just when you mix them is where the trouble starts. I think that's maybe what some see that they have no clue what happened!

New YouTube video uploaded: Precision reloading tools #2: Omega powder trickler

Erick I've got all kinds of tricklers starting with the RCBS to another vibrating trickler. Then I seen the Omega and how it operates and had to have one, made me very happy I did.

Erik,

good stuff, thanks for doing it.

one thing you have posted before that would be a good youtube vid to post is your setup for turning brass with the little HF lathe.

Yes, I'll make a video on that for sure. Many guys have asked me about it.

Erik,
Just saw you were setup on YouTube and subscribed to your channel. I watched the bullet sorting video. Great Work! Thank you.

I think it's great that a person who's looking for some of this type of info can go to one channel to find it , great work Erik..

Let's face it , some of this stuff can be confusing if not worded correctly but when you can SHOW something to someone , that often times is the difference bridging the communication gap.

A session relegated to the proper set up of a sizing die would surely be worth a million plus hits lol.

Look forward to more from your channel and keep up the good work.

Thank you.

A video on proper F/L sizing die setup is coming up soon. :)
