entry level custom vs trued 700

If it were me I would consider a 6xc (for a repeater) or 6bra (single shot) with 50 freebore and shoot 80 Bergers, 80 Blitz, or 85 Sierra HP, or 87 Vmax. 8 twist. Both will have substantial barrel lives if you use AR Comp and R16.

Both will smoke a 22-250 for accuracy and consistency. And have much better splody.

You can do the same with a custom and a shouldered prefit barrel and you don't have to worry about headspace gauges for each caliber and setting headspace. That right there is a big advantage for me. Screw it off and screw another back on. Simple.

With an action like a Bighorn Origin I mentioned you can also change the bolt faces and have one action that can have .308 and a .223 bolt face cartridges in one set up. Another huge advantage.
Shouldn't the headspace be checked even on shouldered prefit barrels?

I’ve been shooting a trued Remington for a few years now and keeping up with senior talent in my area. That statement above “doesn’t matter how much money you put into a Remington, it’s still a Remington” is true, but it doesn’t mean it’s any less accurate. I shoot a Remington because it took me a long time to get my gun built, upgraded as I could afford it, but it was also fun to do them plus a learning curve.

Its really funny when My scores are very high and I get people walking over asking about my gun, till they find out it’s a Remington, the questions generally stop.

Bottom line my opinion is shoot what you can afford and stop thinking about it.
Right on.

It will be used to shoot at my personal long range range and varmint hunting.. but I’ve always no matter what your buying thought to buy the best that can be afforded( if it’s worth it)
In your case, buy the new Remington action. Have it checked by a gunsmith and do only what's necessary. I do the same with my rifles and they out shoot me all day long. 385.00 action. 200-300.00 if needed to clean up. Much cheaper than any custom. For what your needs are, the factory action is perfect.

Here is why I stopped using Remington actions. A guy sends a new 700 action in for a budget build. You will have to time the action to get any primary extraction. If its a case like a 6BR you will crater primers, so now we are bushing the bolt face and turning the pin down. Those two are a given. Now half of the time you come across some other issue, either with the extractor is hanging up (more common on the new ones) or scope holes/action od twisting the base, ext. Most of the time I ended up just fixing those things for free because the whole reason we used a 700 was budget. If your willing to put some money into a 700 you can make it really sweet. One of the better customs gives you a real platform to build off of right out of the gate with much less work needed. Anyone that thinks an action doesnt have a big role in accuracy is not talking from much experience. Its how you build consistently good rifles. Good actions seem to always get good barrels ;)

....and don’t forget the side bolt release! Ya carve a lot of bedding area out just to accommodate the bottom bolt release on a Remington!

Many ask the action I am looking at.. I would prefer no bashing only personal experience if applicable ... that being said I’m looking at a pierce... they are 70 miles from my house talked to them on the phone several times visited the shop... been very nice every time I have spoke with them ... took time to show me the shop when I visited them.. very nice people ...

I understand I don’t “need “ a custom action for what I am doing ... but I will say it’s something I’ve always wanted, and thought maybe why not..
Lots of good advice here and Id say you could probably make a Remington work for what you want, but if what you really want is the custom, I say go for it. Life is about more than just what we need.

Hmm. Contrary to what I said earlier, if Alex says to go with a custom [i.e., always some issue with a factory remington, I'd go with a custom.

The very latest Remingtons I bought from Buds had crazy good primary extraction. The bolt body was also noticeably tighter. In fact, they are downright tight in general compared to the old ones. It is the rumor that Remington actually answered the outcry of the customers to fix the bolt issues.

Hmm. I just wouldn't feel comfortable not confirming headspace.

You could if you want but many thousands of them out there and never been an issue. I know a lot of match shooters that use them and no issues. I have a TL3 action coming in next week and have two barrels sitting here waiting for it. Not concerned in the least bit.

This is what I would do. Buy a 700 action from Buds and screw a pre-fit on. Some of the custom actions aren't what they're cracked up to be.

The last thing I can do is dispute what a certified top shelf gunsmith says about factory vs custom actions. I can however speak from experience and say I have several Remington's and they all shoot as good as MY customs. Yes they were trued up and cleaned up by a gunsmith BUT they aren't expected to win competitions or will not consistently shoot .1-.2s. It's just not my requirement for a hunting rifle. They will shoot .5 consistently for 5-10 shot groups and that's very satisfactory accuracy for any hunting platform. My customs cost in excess of 1000.00 per action. One Remington after work needed was almost 800.00 after buying it from a member here for 450.00 as described as trued/blueprinted. It wasn't. So another 350.00 into it and it's very good IMO. All the others I own are 600-700.00 actions finished. These work for me as hunting actions and I'd never need a custom for this purpose. My Pierce, Surgeon and Stiller actions all shoot equal to the trued Remington's. No regrets here in having and hunting with Remington actions.

the bottom line no BS consensus seems to be that a trued Rem can shoot as accurate as a custom but a custom action works smoother and easier in bolt operation. thats the big reason competitors use them- not disturbing the action in the bags ect. - an add on - The newer remingtons that have been CNC'd are often true enough as they are. just IMO. hope it helps
