Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

Drag racing between stoplights? Sure, buy an EV. But let's travel between Reno and Las Vegas. You in the EV of your choice, me in my beater '92 Civic. Drive the EV as fast as you dare, while I'll honor all speed limits. And I'll beat you to Vegas by 45 minutes and have enough gas in the tank to drive around for a week, while your first stop will be ... the charge station.

And a "used but not abused" Tesla Plaid is going for just shy of $100K?? And at around 4700 pounds, no lightweight.
Go to Vegas in your $100 K Tesla then go home on a $200K + Greyhound.:oops:;)

My favorite part of the video is the close up of the guy turning the black knob.

I think Hydrogen is an option as it has been around for a while, and here in CA there are refueling stations available. That being said, if Hydrogen is so clean, why is a single after treatment module necessary ? I was told the only by product of hydrogen combustion was water. Maybe its for Nox ? That starts to become an issue above around 2200° (combustion temperature).

No, the Tesla plaid can hot lap and it uses 3%-4% of charge per 1/4 mile run. Stock, low 9's at 150 mph thru the 1/4 mile. Strip some weight and they are in the 8's. No cool off time, make runs back to back. Now if your the only plaid at the track, you'll whip some tail. If 3 plaids show up, they all run the same time.

And on the Drag Strip and off the highway is where I wish every single one of these turds to be. Living in CA, my work dictates much driving. In traffic, particularly if one lane is moving slowly, you can bet there is a Tesla (or two) causing the hold up. This vehicle was wrongly named Tesla, it should have been named Impedance. The car may be fast but the typical owner (not all) have zero awareness of other traffic, nor do they care.

"Lack of charging stations, lack of support. Lack of cellular, WI-FI and every now and then satellite interruptions seem to cause headaches. Special tires often mean 3-5 days waiting for a flat tire to be replaced."

This was posted by dellet way back in #13. I didn't realize that cell service and WI-Fi was a concern for these. Most of the places we love to recreate at have no cellular, and indeed vast swaths of our state are lacking good or ANY service. In fact you'd better plan carefully just to find a gas station in many areas, and I doubt that the situation would be different for dedicated charging stations -- jd

Virtue signaling. How old will you be when it becomes both economical and practical to own and operate compared to a diesel?

(My friend loves his EV!)

It will never be economical. That's not the point. We must do everything we cam to save the planet!! "Com on man!" ;)
Cummings, Hyundai, JCB, Toyota all are going in this direction.. I could be wrong but it "shore" looks like H is the future..
Remember the CFL ( Compact Fluorescent Light craze? Didn't last long did it? LED blew all that crap out of the water.. Batteries are the same.. AND heck yes I hold TSLA stock.... Time will tell.

To be fair and clear, this is becoming more and more of a problem with all cars. The electrics are on the cutting edge of technology, so it shows more.

Drive by phone apps are becoming more common for all cars. In the case of Tesla and I would think all manufacturers, this requires a signal from your phone to the company server, back to the car. You can still use the controls of the car, just can not control them with your phone when you lose service.

Navigation tho, can be a problem. If you leave the car key at home, because you trust your phone, it can be a problem. Tesla has a famous incident a couple years ago when their servers went down, about half the Teslas in the world could not be accessed or started.

Leaving your key at home is operator error. Servers going down and stranding a few hundred thousand people is a design problem. A combination of Bluetooth and WiFi has helped, instead of only one or the other. You can now pair your smart watch to your car, works great until you lose the pairing.

These issues show up in strange ways . A customer walks into an independent repair shop and the complaint is “my phone won’t talk to my car”. First response was take it to the dealer, customer answered with “they told me to take it to the phone store, phone store told me take it to the dealer. Where is the closest Apple store, that won’t help anyway.

Many of the navigation programs are WiFi. Start your trip at home, plot your course, drive to your favorite getaway place, with no connection. The programmed route will stay on screen until you shut the car off or put it in park depending on Model. You’re almost to your remote destination, outside of cell service, and the road is closed. Better have a paper map, your now off route with no way to “recalculate”.

Another interesting technology issue is the life span of a wet magnetic strip or chip. The cutting edge keys these days are cards. How long do you have with your key, phone or both in your pocket after falling in the river before it’s useless?

I still have not found an answer to what happen to self driving systems when the signal disappears. Seems to be conflicting information.

Search “wait times for charging stations in Las Vegas”. Every electric car with a charging station locator sends everyone to the same limited sources. 4-5 hour waits to plug in are common on holidays.

Again some of this is EV specific, some is becoming a problem with all vehicles. But until threads like this pop up and the horror stories get told, no one stops to think.

One last feature every one should disable. Automatic braking.

Imagine finding yourself in the middle of the latest peaceful protest and wanting get out, even if you have to run over someone to escape. The car won’t let you go because it senses an object.

She’s parked at a light and two people walk out, one in front, one to the rear and the third is now at the door. What exactly is the exit plan for your 16 year old daughter?

I did some research.
Resale value horrible
Batteries cost thousands to replace
Long time to charge when plugged into house
Cold weather effects
Batteries not in stock for replacement
Ford 150 lightning from a person that I know will go only 200 miles max towing a boat
Quick charger harms batteries
Over time batteries reduce holding a charge
If you drive much how much down time for it to charge

I'll tell you a little story. We had a serious cyclone come through here about five months ago. No issue to us as we live on a hill but our son and his family wore 14 foot of water through their house on the flat. His wife was aware of the risk of flooding and was semi-prepared when the stopbanks burst on the adjacent rivers. She went to get into the Tesla but couldn't start it as the cellphone network had crashed. No problem she thought, just needed to get the card "key" but had forgotten the combination of their safe where it was stored. Couldn't get hold of my son as no cellphones. Nett result- car was drowned and her and the young kids had to be rescued off the roof of their garage. A hard lesson learned.

I can remember back when a great many of us wouldn't even own a truck with an automatic tranny because of the few scenarios where you might be dead in the water compared to a standard transmission. And I've experienced those scenarios many times.

Kind of puts another perspective on driving a car or truck where you are totally dependent on your electric access or WiFi reliability.

Somehow I just don't see us doing stuff like this with EV types.

If they say the value is $200k, and we divide by 3725 hours, that would be $54 per hour, that is, if all of it was just time and no materials. The hardware they used isn't cheap, and neither is the hourly rate of the folks who are capable of this project. Some artists like to work for free, but are we supposed to trust the media?

Once you do the math and it doesn't add up, do you really believe anything else they tell you?
