Easiest rifle competition to get started in ?

I've seen a shooter compete one of these at a 600 yard match and do pretty well with it, a Harris bipod and inexpensive scope. It seems to me that this is a much cheaper, easier route than F-Open with all the attendant hardware.

If you're really looking for the easiest, try CMP rimfire sporter. You probably already have everything you need to compete.

We have a f-class "league" at our club, and we routinely get 20-30 new shooters every year. We're set up to accommodate this with an orientation and a couple of shorter distance nights to get the newer folks acclimated to NRA style competitive shooting. Many of them shoot their deer rifles or AR-15s off inexpensive rests or bipods. With these they can be safely hit paper @ 600 yards, with very little investment. After a little practice, most can manage 180-190ish, but usually top out around there.

However, even though our league is not at all formal in the sense that we don't award prizes or even collect score cards, most guys want to be competitive with their fellow shooters. They find that in order to be competitive, they need to invest their time, money and energy. Some are willing to do this, many are not and fade away. This is likely true of any competitive sport.

out of discipline's mentioned 600 yds bench rest would have to be the most comfortable and social way to shoot-unfortunately bench rest is not to common around my parts so haven't tried it myself.
ftr would be my second choice, so easy to acquire the equipment and shoot good scores without a large investment, a decent 223 varmint rifle being a good example if not going beyond 600

Don't wuss around. Jump into short-range BR with both feet. Either 6PPC or 30BR competition will test your many years of experience and provide the next level of challenge you've been working up to. Go for it! :)

Thank you for all the helpful advice.

It is much appreciated.

I have a factory Remington 40 XBR in 222 Remington Magnum with a Leupold 24X scope, the bullet swaging dies, a B&M powder measure...

Fred Sinclair bedded it.

Hasn't been shot since the mid-70's.

Back then it did OK in 100 & 200 yard.

Wonder if the other shooters in 600 yard would run me off with such an antique ?

Also got a 219 Donaldson Wasp...

I had a very similar rig in that era (.222)and it was a joy to shoot! Get it checked out to make sure it's all square and then you can get your feet wet. If all is well you might group better than you think at 100 and 200. At 600? well it's certainly possible, but might be a fair weather gun at best and I'm not sure if it would be to your advantage to mix it up at that range with that particular config. The other guys might steer you with that. Good luck and certainly enjoy, your good to go short range BR for a while at least.

I did have a great shooting 222 mag. but that was then. Now it isn't remotely good enough for short or long BR. i t would need a new barrel with a fast twist 6.5 or 7 to use the big bullets 80-90 gr. in a .223 and it will better used at 600 and use your existing bolt face. I would assume you have front and rear bags so you would be good to go……… Myself i would keep it as is and build myself a completive rifle in 6 BR or a Dasher with an 8 twist barrel and really be completive and with a 40+ power scope…….. jim

I have another factory Remington 40X in 6BR if that would work.

Cannot recall its twist. It may be a slow twist.

And yes, have all the benchrest bags and rests.

Hammer, Just put on a new Brux HV. @ 28" in 6BR get the action trued, and bedded and good trigger and i would try the new Weaver 46 power scope and they are super good for 800.00 and then get your feet wet :)……. have fun…….. jim

To the OP, The EASIEST by far is ABRA. Semi-auto 22's at 50 yds off bench. Factory class any semi will do, some low end cci, sk, norma, etc, and a rolled up coat will get you started. Cheap scope with 16X to start. There wont be a match at Moore Farms until Tomorrow at 2 p.m. Seymour
