Bayou Rifles will be holding an intro to NRA High Power F-class competition followed by a wind reading class on May 3rd, 2014. The regular monthly 1000 yard match will be held the next day so you can put in practice what you just learned the day before.

You can get more information here http://www.bayourifles.org and that page has been updated.

Sounds great, Denys.
What time start/finish on Saturday?
Only range equipment to bring for clinic is scope, tripod, and chair, right? (plus the other goodies you mentioned)

9:00AM for the first part and 1:00PM for the second part. I'm thinking sometime after 4:00PM for the end.

What you listed is good.

I'm hoping the website I linked to has all the required information.

Re: Intro to NRA HP comp. and wind reading class, May 3rd, Houston, TX (It's on!)

The training session was held this past weekend as scheduled.

We had 55 people pre-registered for it and only 3 no-shows which were immediately replaced by people who had not pre-registered but came out anyway.

I can't say enough about the people who put on the training; many of them are members here; Mark Walker, Don Diffey, Matt Davis, Richard Goody, Richard King, David Bailey, Bennett Ford and others.

The attendees had a chance to work the pits during live fire, do scoring duties, and get exposed to everything that goes on in a match. In the afternoon session Mark spent some time going over wind reading techniques, tips and so on and then we broke up into several groups with a shooter and a coach and attendees all around each little group. The shooting began with explanation of shots at first and then the audience got into the act and started making their own wind calls for the shooter and the results would be discussed. For most attendees this was their very first exposure to competition shooting and the question were coming fast and furious.

I had mentioned this to a friend of mine but he said it was not listed on the club website Monthly Calendar for May so he thought it was not going to happen and did not attend. I guess he did not look under the Competitions section then under High Power Rifles. Are things like this not listed on the calendar? It would have helped him if he was a member of this forum and found or asked about it here.

That's interesting. It was on the front page of bayourifles.org for several weeks, as well as in the competition page. We also sent out an email to the Bayou membership and I posted at several Internet boards. A couple of weeks prior to the event, we took down the posting on the front page in an effort to stem the flow of registration. We far exceeded our wildest expectations and had to quickly ramp up.

Bill, Mike and Rod, thanks for the kind words. It was a lot of work but the folks who attended made it all worthwhile. I'm especially proud of our volunteers who stepped up to the plate and delivered (if I may be permitted to mix my metaphors here.)

I will say one thing though. When I read the threads about how we should change the rules to allow anybody with a rifle to be immediately competitive at F-class, "in order to attract new shooters (tm)," I can't help but chuckle. The training day that we put on is THE way to attract new shooters.

Of course, I could say that it's a lot more work than keyboarding on a thread about how it's unfair that your Wally World special with cheap surplus ammo on two sticks can't compete with the fancy rifles top competitors use. I could say that, but I'll refrain from making that point.

Amen Denys x 1000!!!!

Are there plans to have another session in the coming months?

In a word, no. In longer words, not any real time soon. This required an extraordinary amount of work and preparation. We were overwhelmed by the response and kept increasing registration and adding volunteers to the point where we had to worry about the capacity of the range to handle the crowd the way we wanted to set up and be able to deliver a quality program.

This is my final year as match director at Bayou and so it will be up to next year's MD to see if he wants to do this, but for the rest of my tenure, no way. I do have a different program in mind for the fall semester, but it may never see fruition so I won't discuss it.

Thanks for the nice words, Alama308. The team of volunteers was just great.

That is probably why he missed it. I had told him a couple of months ago about your course but he waited to long to check into it and he is not a member of your club so he did not get the club emails.

I just checked your website and it still says you plan on doing this again in the fall. With the great success of the May 3rd class you may want to remove this before the level of expectations for the fall course gets too high.
