Does this look like a bore of unfired takeoff barrel to you?

That is a rough tube. The rougher they are - the more carbon and copper they collect. I am of the opinion this is a largely unfired tube. If someone had shot any large number of rounds out of it, they would likely have resorted to mechanical abrading to get out all of the copper and carbon (especially the carbon) out. That process would have taken out the very light scratches which are still present in the tube. I have watched those light surface scratches get polished right out doing it myself. There are a few good corrosion patches in there somewhat typical of a rifle sitting around for a long time without the bore having been treated after shooting - also somewhat symptomatic of a new tube as compared to any tube that had undergone a good scrubbing and oiling or preserving. If you got this really cheap and/or are doing the head spacing yourself, might be very worthwhile - otherwise I'm with jonbearman - I'd prefer to find a decent aftermarket tube. Good luck!

It looks good for a Savage, I have one it’s a model 10 BA, the barrel is so rough it sings when you clean it and it is the most accurate factory rifle I’ve ever bought!!

I always thought they fired them one time at the factory but I'm not really sure. It looks basically new to me, especially when you look at those lands.

Looks like a typical new Savage barrels. I'm never going to borescope one of my factory Savage barrels. I just had a fv .223 new take off thread for a brake for prairie dog shooting and banging steel. I'll bet I can get it to shoot 1/2 moa. My other 2 do. No bore scoping Savage barrels for me...

I'm glad no one took me up on my bet. Around May I went to install the .223 barrel I bought off of here. I was at my buddy's house and we were messing with rifles so I decided to put this together at his house like we have done many times. I couldn't get an accurate headspace, after multiple tries we decided to borescope it. My go gauge had some surface marks running parallel on it. My buddy said to me, time to pull out the borescope. The chamber looks as if someone took a screwdriver or a cold chisel and drove it up in there to aid in holding the barrel so they could knock the nut loose. It was sold to me as a new take off which I don't doubt that it is, but in the manner that he or they took it off turned it into nothing better than a tomato stake and a lesson. This is the first time I've mentioned this on here and I've chalked it up to that, a lesson.

Everything I sell on here, especially firearms and stocks I give the purchaser a 3 day inspection after they receive an item from me. If they are not satisfied I will refund their money and pay for the shipping back to me. If I buy another barrel off off here I will ask the seller for the same courtesy. On a lighter note, I just bought a barrel, .223 from Urbanrifleman, it's a shooter. Savage barrels are rough as a cobb. :D

I recently bought a Savage take off barrel that was advertised as unfired be the seller. Just got a borescope and took video of the bore. Never used borescope before and I am no barrel expert. But this doesn't look good to me at all. In fact, I ran the borescope in my 7x57 DWM Mauser that is over 100 years old and lands look sharper. I uploaded video clip on youtube. Please let me know what you think.

IMO those are tool marks not fire racking and erosion from firing. Ya gets what ya pays for!

Looks unfired to me on a very, very poor quality barrel. Shooting may offer a great surprise, and using a good copper solvent for the life of the barrel is to be expected. De copper in 15-21 round intervals to start with, and if you go 50 rounds, you may have a chore on your hands.

I would guess, like others, that it has only been fired for testing, by savage, prior to sending it to a dealer, for sale.

leave the copper. I've gone a couple hundred rounds on a Savage barrel during a weekend match and it shot as well at the end as it did when first fouled. The up side, does not take a lot of fouling shots to foul a Savage barrel.

Looks new to me. Not bad for a factory barrel.
I did borescope brand spankin' new FV12 barrels (2) and was sorely disappointed in what I saw, BUT they still shoot sub MOA on a regular basis.
First thing to do is GET RID OF THE BORE SCOPE!!!

That should have told you something right there. :(
You're busy looking at the bore with you Scope (and wondering if I got screwed) and I've burned off 20 rounds with 5 shot groups that can be covered with a dime.
Don't need a Bore Scope to tell me if the barrel will shot or not.:(

I DON'T use a borescope to tell me if the barrel will shoot or not.

The target tells me that just like you said, 5 shot groups covered by a dime.

You'll have to get in line, (and it's a long line so be prepared for a long wait) if you want to tell me how to spend my time, whether it's wasted time or not, it's my call. ;)

Every Savage barrel comes from the factory looking like that. The down side is you will worry about nothing.

Every Savage rifle with an ugly barrel will shoot well right out of the box. Stop worrying and start shooting.
