Does anyone shoot ELR with a 284?

I dont know. This is not my match. I would assume there is one, and if so I will be there, it is a lot of fun. And a whole other world of accuracy.

Last year there was one in the Townsend, Montana area (August 2018). 2K event that I think was mostly you who posted it in the ELR section of the forum. Wanted to make it but really didn't have a rifle up to the task. That's the event I'm speaking of. Thanks. John

ELRC had the match, I was there. I brought a 6mm and never saw an impact. .338 is done now and tuned for next year though. I strongly recommend nothing smaller than a 338 for this match.
I have a 284 that shoots 180 hybrids.I have only shot it out to 1500 yds. Five and 7/8 inch 3 shot group. Maybe not enough gun for 2000 yards?

A mile is 1760, do you think it would make it there?

2,000 is probably not a realistic goal. If I can group at 1,500 and get hits at a mile, I'll be happy.

I have decided on a scope: Meopta Optika 6 5-30x56 with Dichro MRAD reticle. I put a deposit on one.

I was thinking about a Steiner T5Xi 5-25x56 because Cameraland had demos for $1,350 and the windowed elevation knob that can count past one rev but I think the reticle is just an MRAD crosshair. The Meopta is $900 and I wouldn't be surprised if the glass is better.

My orders from Indian Creek Design and Bruno's arrived yesterday.

The stock looks very nice. It's a simple piece, machined and finished very nicely, adjustable but set and forget. The folder is a nice slim design with great finish again. They should both complement my MDT LSS chassis which is on the way.

Since I have a 31" barrel on order, I want the folder just to make storage and transport easier but a folder adds LOP so it became an issue of finding a short stock to make it work. The ICD setup fit the bill for $250 compared to a $160 Luth-AR, a $30 buffer tube and a $150 MDT folder. After I add a $13 butt pad and moleskin to the comb, it's still about $70 cheaper than the Luth-AR/MDT option and a cleaner look.

Thinking about weight, I might want to try to balance out the 31" light varmint barrel by adding a heavy bag rider or butt pad spacer to the stock. I think I'm about 14 lbs of rifle once I add an Arca rail, bipod and scope so I can add a pound of two before the weight starts to approach excessive.

I got my Moleskin and a target to shoot at today.

Tomorrow I think my scope rail and Devcon steel epoxy are coming.

Yesterday I placed an order with Midway USA. It includes my butt pad, neck expanding tools and neck turning pilot.

I also ordered up an MK Machining rail mounted level (with a free throw lever for a different scope I own) and a turret magnifier to try out.

I have also been looking for scope caps. I think I can mix a Hawke aluminum objective lens flip cap with a Tenabraex ocular flip cap.

I have a set of ARC M10 rings to hold the scope. I would go with something cheaper but they are just sitting there so I'll use them until they are needed elsewhere.

The grip is a question. I think I might end up at an FDE color MDT vertical grip just to match but I want to wait for Black Friday to buy. Hopefully they will have a similar sale compared to last year so I can get maybe three magazines instead of one and the grip to go with the chassis.

I can test in the factory stock and magazine before I get MDT magazines.

I think I want to get an Area 419 Arca Lock rail with a Grip Changer setup and barricade adapter. That will give me a lot more forend to rest the rifle on, a barricade clamp setup and a compliant "bag" type feature for doing improvised rests.

I'll use the grip changer across a few rifles so I'm not concerned about cost there. The Arca Lock rail is about $100. I think I might have to do something about the surface in front of the magazine well to make it a more effective barricade clamp.

I have some plans to improve the trigger too. Maybe I'll try to time the action for easy bolt lift and easy extraction but that should be about it for modifications.

After that, I need a case, loaded ammo and maybe a hit indicator with a big gong or travel to a place that has a ~permanent mile+ range with targets already set up.

Report your results and experience using your MDT LSS Chassis. I'm close to ordering one for a LA Weatherby Vanguard action for a 300 PRC. It's a new platform for me and looking at the MDT has me really wanting a chassis set up for a long range 30 caliber rifle. Post your results once you've been behind it at the range.

I will but I'm trying to stay on a budget which means I'm going to wait for Black Friday to buy magazines because the Savage Long action and I think the Tikka use an oddball 3.56" magazine.

Last year MDT had a 50% off magazine sale so I would rather buy three magazines at $40 each than one at $80.

Unfortunately, that means it will be mid December before I can get to the range at best and more likely January due to the holidays.

One more thing, the way I intend to use the LSS is just a stable, no bedding (I might bed the recoil lug a little) platform/detachable bottom metal. I'm having to add on everything else which is why I only considered buying it on clearance.

For the Savage Long action, the oddball magazines and almost no forearm make it a very hard sell at full price. I didn't order it because it's exactly what I want, I ordered it because it will work and it was cheap (barring the magazine issue).

I expect it will work well for me but probably no better than a wood or fiberglass stock with an aluminum mini chassis insert except that I'll have adjustability and folding for the butt but that's due to the stock I ordered, not the LSS directly.

I got the LSS this evening. First impression is it is fine.

It's hard to see but I think the inlet forms a V-block between the magazine well and the recoil lug and also a narrow section at the rear action screw. The areas in-between seem to be relieved a bit so the receiver should have a few thousandths of float in the middle.

The trigger guard is very chunky and the forend is very short for the 31" barrel I'm going to add. When I install an Area 419 Arcaloc rail, that should improve the proportions but it might not be super ridgid.

I'm going to play with the stock mounting a bit. So far it looks like it is going to give me a very clean look with the STFU folder.

Hopefully I can make it swing right and avoid the bolt handle.

Since the scope I'm getting has a dichroic reticle instead of traditional illumination, the parallax knob is low profile but the windage turret is not.

If I can fold right, that will let me use a reasonable size gun case without the undue thickness of the stock on one side with the windage turret and bolt knob on the other.

I have another rifle that folds left which makes it shorter but wide and lumpy.

The color will be nice. MDT offers their vertical grip in FDE so that should match. The Moleskin on the cheekpiece should match pretty well and the black parts of the stock and action will provide contrast. I may rattle can black the stainless barrel if I don't like the raw look. The magazines and scope will also be a contrasting black color.

I ordered a smooth barrel nut that was on clearance. I'm not sure if I'm going to use it but it might be a nice look.

RL26 will get the 19x gr bullets to 2800+ fps and that's as good as the standard 284 case gets. Energy and trajectories will be identical to the 300 WM with 210+ gr bullets. Trajectories will also be identical to the 338s but energy will lag 500 ft lb at distance, and that's the difference between seeing a splash or not.

I'd say if your shooting a 6" group at 1500 yards, you missed your calling. Especially with a 284. That's unheard of accuracy or I'm out of touch with what accuracy is today. I'm happy with 6-10" groups at 1000 and it's more that latter 95% of the time.

I just ordered an Accu-trigger to play around with. I think if I can get a clean break under 2#, it will be ok.

Last night I got out my spare ARC Nucleus recoil lug which I think is 0.1875" thick and flat ground. It fits the recoil lug slot in the LSS so that plan is still looking good. I haven't measured the slot but from the fit I would guess around 0.200", not tight but not a big gap either.

That was my best group. I have shot groups under 6 inches with my 6.5X284, also. Of course it can,t be done everytime.

I opened up some boxes today. I got my butt pad, case neck expanding setup, a few other reloading bits for 284, an Accu-trigger, my Leupold Backcountry one piece base, a bottle of PVA for bedding mold release and a smooth barrel nut.

Now my butt pad is installed, my ARC rings are on my Leupold base and I'm waiting on my barrel, scope, magazines and a grip.

It's not really close but it's getting there.

The Accu-trigger feels nice, I don't think I'll have to mess with it right away. The Leupold base seems very nice but upon first look, I don't see any indication on the packaging or rail that it's made from 7075. Hopefully it's not BS. The ARC rings seem to fit fine but I really need the scope to confirm that.

I think I'll try to expand some necks this weekend.

use RE17 exclusively for it now. It's as accurate as 4831 and gives much more velocity. I haven't tried any other RE powders with it because I found an accurate, repeatable load at the velocity I need, so I stopped experimenting and now call it good: 52.0 RE17, Lapua Brass, CCI BR2 and 180 JLK VLD.

That's the other reason I like the .284: Easy to develop a good load, and no need to burn down barrels testing or keep your seating depth to within milimeters. Just run a .139 freebore and shoot 180's seated somewhere near the lands and the case mouth.
