284 F class Re-barrel question

I'm looking to re-barrel my Barnard F class 284, I can buy a 6 groove 9 twist barrel for half the cost of a 4 groove 9 twist. My question is if there is important reason to go with the 4 groove barrel? Like to get some input. I shoot a couple little 6's that have three groove and really like the accuracy and how they cleanup. Thanks for the help.

I would rather have the 4 groove. From what I read the thinner the lands the quicker the throat wore. I don't remember where I read it. I also believe it would be less bullet deformation which should help at long range. Matt

Found a 5 R 8 barrel @ 32" I'll probably go with it unless I hear that the 4 groove is a better way to go.

If you are just hunting around for opinions on barrels, either the 4 groove "conventional" or the 5R is excellent. One thought however, you might consider either a 1-8.75 or 1-8.5. My opinion is that they shoot a tad better than a straight 9 at 1000 yards. But you know what "they" say about opinions! Just something to consider..

Found a 5 groove with 8 twist. One shooter recommended the 8 twist over the 9 as I'm only shooting 180 Hybrids. Thanks for the input, I'll probably go with the 5 groove 8 twist barrel @ 32"

DO NOT go to a straight 8 twist!!!! It will torque uncontrollably! Stay with a 1-8.75 or 1-8.50..

Shootdots is correct....we both have bought 8 twist to try...if you drive the 180 class bullets to fast they blow up out of the 8 twist....also the torque is a big issue ....go with a 8.75 or 8.5

Thanks for the heads up, I'll find an 8.5 or and 8.75 twist barrel. Appreciate it, big surprise would have never imagined that but thats why I appreciate this site, great information.
