7mm twist and groove configuation question

I'm currently shooting a 284 Shehane and am looking ahead to my next barrel. I shoot primarily at 1,140 ft. above MSL and my standard 4 groove 1-9 twist is working just fine with 177.5 - 180 gr. bullets.
Do any of you 7mm gurus run a tighter twist or a 5 groove barrel?
I'm planning on testing some 183 gr. SMK's soon but that is intel I don't yet have. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Lloyd

I have ran 5C's n a 30 cal. And 6MM. I have had real good luck with them. I alas, tend to go to slightly faster twist if I am on the edge of stability. It seems to help at distance when conditions get worse. Matt

I have three 7mm's...two are 1-in-9 and one is a 5R 1-in-8 3/4...I shoot 168 Long Range Accubonds and 175 Partitions and cant tell the difference in either rifle. Both bullets are long and can be a little tough to stabilize. Rifle twist is like a wife...always a little better to err on the tight side and choke up a little more. They act up worse of you don't. Rifles and women...both are always "on the edge of stability."

I've shot both a 3 groove 9 twist and 5 groove 8.5 twist barrel with 180 hybrids. To be honest, I get great accuracy with both. I'm just about ready to send the action off for a couple of new barrels. I'm going back to 9 twist because I haven't seen any advantage to the 8.5

I have shot 180 Hybrids in 9 twist at sea level. I am on barrel number 3. Barrel 4 will be an 8 twist. I want to try the new Sierra 183 and see if I get any higher BC out of the Hybrids on the cold winter days. They always shoot great but I find I have to trim the BC in winter (I measure MV) ans suspect my stability is marginal when air density gets really high.

FeMan,
I shoot with a guy that runs the 183 SMK's with a 9 twist and shoots them very well. He holds sub 1 moa at 1K.
Thanks,

Lloyd

Thanks Lloyd. What's the elevation he is shooting them at? I am at sea level and they key holed for me in my 9 twist. They look so sleek and they are cheap. I really want them to shoot!
