Do you remember when, ...

Do you remember when you could go the range with just your rifle and 1-2 box's of factory ammo and have great day? I think I can remember that far back.
Then I had to have a range bag to carry all the things I needed to have fun shooting.
Then of course I had to have a good spotting scope, And the larger range bag because I might need this or that while I was there.
And then I needed a cart to carry the things I might need, after that came a small trailer because I was going out of town to shoot.

Then I needed a larger trailer because, well I might need this or that when going here or there to shoot. Then my jeep Grand Cherokee became a 3/4 ton truck because the jeep said enough, no more of this.
Then I thought a even larger trailer because it might be nice because I could put bunk in it to catch a nap between rounds, hey, why not put a platform on top of the trailer?

That way I could sit up there and watch all the shooter at once! And you know if I had cot up there I wouldn't have climb down to catch a nap in the trailer.
You know maybe I need larger trailer to carry all this stuff, and I'm not sure my 3/4 ton pick up is up to the task, so maybe a 1 ton truck would be better, I mean who wants to slow down just you have to drive through steep mountains?

Do you remember when you went to the range with just your rifle and a 1-2 box's of factory ammo?

Yea I remember and I quickly got smart - I purchased a range box so I wouldn't forget my earmuffs, targets, ammo, staple gun, stables, and other range essentials.

Then I got stupid, I loaded the box with stuff I "might need," creating clutter.

Then I got smart again and downsized back to just the essentials.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

The problem was I never did need "it", and I had so much non-essentials I couldn't easily locate the essentials or it too much time to load and unload the truck. For example, I had cleaning rods, I never ever used them at the range so why did I pack them? But each to his own.

That's what I told myself some number of years ago when I was returning to shooting shotgun: gun, ammo, vest and glasses, I was good to go.
Well, moved back to the Left Coast, shotgun ranges nearby just aren't the same, and I'm back to benchrest. Miss the simplicity.

Most of the extra stuff I carry is used by other shooters....

I always carried a book bag with me in fact I used it in High School and I still use it to this day even though I am 52 years old. It is heavy nylon with leather bottom. You have to cary some tools, boxes of ammo, patches, small cleaning kit, stable gun and targets etc...

All is fine till your first round of 17FB slips past the extractor on the Contender and you don't have a rod to tap the D$#N thing out...and no matter how you try closing it the extractor is missing the pull.... have to drive 6 miles home after one shot.

I remember in my early 20s my friend and I would load experimental rifle and TC ammunition during our free evenings after work.
Saturday we would take everything out to Clark brothers and shoot for a few hours.
Nowadays I step out of my shop and set down at my bench and shoot.
I miss the old days sitting on the bench At Clark brothers talking guns with a bunch of people similar to you.
Oh yeah I have a bunch of stuff Ive got to carry out to the bench now, but I’ve acquired one of those little hand baskets they have in grocery stores and it makes it easier.

I remember those days and I found a way to go back. I bought a couple pistol caliber lever guns. I can grab one and 50 rounds and go have fun! I leave my range bag, front rest and all the other “crap” at home. They are my grown man’s Red Ryder.

I can remember, in Jr High; four of us farm kids taking shotguns and 22's to school and leaving them in the Principals Office. After school, we got them and went rabbit and bird hunting. Imagine four 12 year olds doing that today...?
