Remember when?

One Saturday morning I was carrying three '98s down main street in town I had bought at "Joe the Motorist Friend". The chief of police drove by...and waived "Hi".

I remember the day when you bought a firearm the only question asked, "Do you need ammo" and the only paperwork was a receipt.

When I was in school we could be excused from classes for the first two days of our antlered deer season, but not today. They wouldn't excuse my oldest grandson to go hunting but would for a week long trip to Disney World because it was "Educational" >:(

Oh you young punks.
I never took a gun to school and I'm older than anyone who has posted yet.
I walked to school in the morning, home for lunch ( round trip) and home again at 3:00 and this was in Detroit. After school we would walk to the playground where no one messed with us. Either I was the bully or there weren't any of those around. During the various sport seasons we either were at the practice or the game of the week. Need I say more?

as she would be subject to suspension or even expulsion just for talking about a firearm or a firearm related activity in school.

Here in Central Ohio, I just bought my grandson his first 22lr about three weeks ago. I do remember telling him: "Ya know...it's probably best if you don't tell everyone at school about it." Maybe a couple close friends, but don't announce it to the class. He's a sharp kid...he understood.

I graduated from High School in 57. In the fall, I would get on the Bus with my Double Barrel Parker and Hunting Vest full of shells. Ride 6 miles to school. Go by the Principals office and leave it propped in the corner and say, "I'm going hunting with a friend this afternoon and riding on another bus". He would say, "Have a good day and let me know what you kill". Things change----

. How do you know you are older than anyone else that has posted so far? I said I graduated HS in 1972, what I didn't say was that I was 27 when I graduated. 8)

Hey STS, I din't know you were related to Jethro Bodine! LOL!!!

Graduated in '81. Never took a gun to school, but had a scabbard on my Schwinn which I regularly rode out of my subdivision to hunt Dove and Squirrel with an old single shot .20ga given to me by my grandmother. I was probably 13-14. I wouldn't dream of letting my kid do that now, unless I was in a much less liberal town.

STS,
You graduated?
You didn't? Heck yes I graduated. 4th grade twice, 6th grade 3 times, summer school several times not to mention taking a couple of years off for "personal development."

I'm not related to Jethro but I know him. He was a senior when I was a freshman. I still made it out before him. That boy was slow.

My high school had a small bore rifle team. There were bullet traps along one wall of the wrestling room. Then the school went through a large remodel and additions. The wrestling room and small bore got eliminated.

"Joe the Motorists Friend" Jeez, I thought i was the only living person who knew that place and the fact that they sold guns. I bought my first Deer rifle, a cosmoline encased 303 Enfield. At 16 years old and out $15.95 I was on my way. Needless to say, that was many years ago and I killed many a Deer with it..
The town I grew up in had one theater that was owned by the same guy that owned the RC Cola plant ( its a soft Drink :-) ).
On Saturday mornings you could get in the movie , a bag of popcorn and a small soda (RC of course) for presenting three RC bottle caps at the ticket booth. there you could watch Tom Mix or Bronco Billy save the damsel and kill the villain without any sight of blood. Which explained why he showed up again next week.
The catch was that the matinee started at 11:00 am. Now the local folks went into town on Saturday to do their shopping and came home in the afternoon and that was it... NO running back and forth to town. To make the show one had to be out on the road no later than 7am in order to catch a ride for the 15 miles and back on the road at around 2pm for the same. I have walked that 15 miles so many times I still remember every tree and rock. The idea is that even though at 13 years old and may not get home until after dark, the only fear from my parents about me suffering any ill effects were that I might get snake bit or fall down. Any thing involving harm from other people was unthinkable and unheard of..

Ah, the good ole days.. Up at dawn milking cows, gathering eggs and slopping the hogs.. Regardless of what anyone says, the greatest invention EVER !!! Is an electric butter churn...

Good night Irene..
