Do it yourself Stock making thread

Bc’z: I kinda like the patch. Look at it closely. It looks like a little ghost sticking his tongue at me.
Scasa:
I built 2 tables with it while in Texas. I brought back a hunk I might be able to get a couple blanks out of if I do hunter style stocks. Mesquite is interesting to work with, and fickle. Be careful of your equipment. Some boards will work nicely and others can be as hard as a rock. Literally!
When doing my first table, I bought some boards. I noticed they were heavy. A 9 ft. X13”X 2” weighed 100 pounds.
I tried to put one thru my table saw and ruined an $80 blade in the first 12 inches of the first cut. I ended up using a Skilsaw , a straight edge and 20 cheap carbide blades to make the cuts. I used a router instead of a jointer to finish the edges. I think that took 6 bits.
The boards for the second table were from a different tree and cut much easier.
I used a 2 to one slow cure epoxy that’s used for bar tops and river tables. On my first test filling cracks, I mixed turquoise dust in the epoxy and poured it in a crack. The next day, I found the turquoise dust had settled to the bottom of the crack, leaving the epoxy almost clear at the top. The problems of slow cure. My solution was to color a batch with the cheaper mica additives and fill the crack to 1/4” below the table surface and let it set. The second fill was thickened to “peanut butter” with turquoise dust and chips. If I had a bigger crack, I’d place larger chunks in the top coat. They require the use of a grinder with a diamond blade to cut them level with the top.
A couple tips:
Tyvec tape is unaffected by epoxy. Use it to seal the bottom of cracks and end grain. The epoxy will not dissolve the adhesive and leak.
You can make a thick turquoise paste to seal a crack, then tape over it, invert it, and finish filling from the other side.
I bought most of my turquoise from Amazon. Dust to large chunks I could break up with a hammer. Be careful of the fake cheap stuff! It’s dyed, not real! Blue on the outside, white on the inside.
Using West system 205-206 with blue turquoise dust will give you green filler.
Using the 2-1 “bar top stuff” gives you blue and doesn’t change the color but it takes 24 hours to cure.
I used regular Titebond and biscuits (double stacked) to join the boards.
The first table:

Freakin stunning!!
A local shop sells Mesquite tables like these for $10 to 15 THOUSAND!! I think that’s outrageous, so I make them on the cheap. I made and gave the second table to my Cousin’s secretary, who helps us out a lot. Her husband owns a large Exotic game ranch for hunting. I might have had an ulterior motive, but hey...two birds with one stone!

Those look really nice, You do good work. I guess I got lucky with the mesquite log I cut up. I cut it length wise with a chain saw into slabs then flattened them with a hand planer and then through the planer to get some flat slabs. They look pretty nice and will make a nice set of grips . I may have to make a pistol to use up some of the rest of it .

Your making the stock and I'm making like 30 pic rails to suite the mini actions at the moment . Well I just closed the workshop up down here.

Do you have an extra rail for sale? What do you mean “closed down the shop”?

You going to send it to Brett to stain it and make it look out there with 1 of his finishes?
I had thought about it. He does absolutely fabulous work, but.....
I’m trying to do this on the cheap. Shipping back and forth costs, chances of being lost, blah, blah........besides.....I’d like to learn how. He is, graciously, giving me pointers via PM! He’s the best!

Hahaha wish I was in different country someday laws are backwards here . Only got 30 rails to finish this order off. Then the bloke will probably order more. But I also have my own private stuff rails to make and get a few stocks made aswell. Plus I have 6 stocks to finish in my workshop at the moment. Coming into winter here no snow but windy and raining

If you ever want a room in the warm, gun friendly state of Texas, my door is open to ya!
Cheers!

If you check out the blacktail studio YouTube page, he's selling epoxy tables for close to that. Sell a few tables for 10k and you can buy your milling machine.
And the turquoise epoxy goes great with mesquite.

I've watched a few of his videos.
He produces an amazing product and makes it look easy.

Just discovered this awesome thread! Many thanks to the op for taking the time to educate us on stock making! I am still working my way through the 55 pages which are chock full of great information!

PS your tables look a lot like the George Nakashima tables. I visited his workshop in New Hope PA many years ago and love his work.

Yeah, there is some influence from his work. My mother was an artist. In my younger years, I was dragged thru more artist’s studios than I can remember. I was in his shop and met the man. Luckily, I inherited the pieces my mother bought there.
