Didn’t Alliant announce powder production suspension ?

It’s pretty scary on what was posted on the component thread on the price of Shooters World powder. Maybe we can be priced out of this game.
I think that Vista jacked the price up while they had orders in hand to increase the value of the Kinetic Group while the negotiations with the CSG group were going on while they was still a shortage of powder in the market. The retail pricing right now is for powder that procured during that time. It is really out of the market right now.

Thanks for the reminder!

In hindsight, what happened to the nitrocellulose shortage? Did it affect just Alliant's suppliers?

Several months ago I read about Alliant suspending powder production. At least in my LGS it’s continued to be in stock and regularly I see the shelves being re-filled. Prices are astronomical but I’m surprised the stuff even exists. Has anyone heard of a change of plans by Alliant?
No, I think that was the plan all along. Announce a cut in production after record production volume to maximize the profit on that dump of powder. I suspect after a pm or 2 that production was continued at high volume and high price. Bravo! Way to play the market.

An oil executive must have transferred into their company.

I really don’t care if Alliant powders ever come back, to many other good powders in the market that are just as good or better for better price, availability and performance.

Same, unless other manufacturers can't keep up with demand and now everyone is fighting to less inventory.

I've begun the shift to Vihtavuori powders to hedge my bet, and so far have been happy with the results. While I have a supply of my favorite powders, I see no reason to not find substitutes, especially when they are available and reasonably priced (by today's standards), eg, some VV powders are on sale right now at Midsouth.

Me too.

But, there is a lot of Alliant powder available now - admittedly they have joined the price to market club.
There's now 97 listings of Alliant powder for sale on shootingbot

Define exactly what is “a lot”.

There really is not that many Alliant powders available out there. The listing you mentioned has several retailers and therefore most of them have the same powders.

How many powders do Alliant offer? Then multiple that by say a couple dozen online vendors. That number would be far much much bigger than 97 so no I completely disagree that there are “a lot” of them available out there at this moment.

The online retailers only have a few Alliant powders in stock which likely are leftover/old stock/slow movers.

It's 'a lot' compared to what it would be if Alliant had cancelled all orders - which would have been essentially no powder available.

Also once a manufacturer cease production for a certain market, it still takes time for the remaining inventory to move from the factory/distributors to the retailers. This does not happen overnight.

A lot of powders are imported so it can take months after the final shipment. Those boats and ports and trucks are not exactly that fast.

RL16 “on sale” at MidSouth:

$419.99 ($52.50/lb) per 8-pound jug. Limit 6 per order.
$56.99 per 1-pound bottle. Limit 30 per order.

That’s probably a smart buy, if you like loading with RL16.

Perhaps. The announcement was over 7 months ago and I see more Alliant powder available today than when the announcement was made. Some types, e.g., MR 2000 and RL 15.5 are available today and hadn't been available for some time before the announcement.

There's also a bunch more powder available from all suppliers, so the reason that there was a nitrocellulose shortage seems to have evaporated.

Or maybe the reloaders simply have reached the point that they are slowing down/no longer buying because of high powder prices. Ever heard of the law of supply and demand?

I know plenty of guys that wants to buy some more powders but couldn’t afford the current market prices.
