cutting oil

I just use whatever cutting oil is available.

The machine shop at work uses a cutting fluid from Castrol for heavier duty cutting. Kinda thick & gray in color. Can't remember the name of it. Mostly use it for cutting threads with some of our larger taps, or if the material is really hard.

Flood coolant for everything except threading. I use Viper's Venom for that.

I tried all of the oils and ended up with the best one being plain old Rapid Tap.

For threading I use the clear Rapid Tap.

I am a hobbyist. My reamers are precious. I do not use a coolant though system. Tap Magic Xtra thick is what I use with it's viscosity of 300, it will stay on a part at 300 rpm if you are turning it.

Also, if you are using a reamer pusher, you will not feel the reamer cutting the steel, all you feel is resistance on the reamer pusher as you hold it. I warm the X tra thick in a baby bottle warmer that sits on the headstock of my lathe. You will never see chip weldment on the reamer flutes when using the Tap Magic Xtra thick.

I feel like this product is the very best at reducing the friction between the reamer and steel it is cutting, and there is no other product that will compare that I have used...none.

I use Castrol Moly D to thread with, and when it is gone, I will use the Xtra thick to thread with. I never quit trying different products.

All through the mid 80's, we used High sulphur products/mixed with Transmission fluid to a great degree of success. The Tap Magic Xtra thick is in a class by it's self when it comes to reducing friction between the Reamer and chamber, something you just have to feel as you hold a reamer pusher...incredible to say the least! I get my Xtra thick from Zoro when they have a sale with free shipping and 20-25% off.

If you are cheap, then just keep using Oatley. Vipers Venom is sure an upgrade from Oatley!

I don't want any moly products or extra slick stuff, cutting not trying to reduce friction. I tried a bottle of engine assembly lube and you almost cant cut with it. I still use this on my reamer pilots though.
I use and am about out of a one gallon can of extra dark honing oil. Not sure what is going to replace it but sounds like the tap magic dark might be in order.

Castrol ilocut 486.i use it with a flushing system.pumps easily, great lubrication for reamers and leaves excellent finish on chambers..no problems with it at all.highly recomend it.

Tap Magic makes a LOT of different cutting fluids.

The Xtra Thick, is actually that. I put the fluid in a squirt bottle on top of the headstock in a baby bottle warmer, then the viscosity is MUCH thinner, but you still maintain the cutting properties. The first time I used the Xtra thick, I had the shock of my life. I was starting to ream the chamber after boring, the reamer was going in, but I could not "feel" the cut between the reamer and the barrel steel. I went in half an inch, still could not feel any friction between the cutting tool and the barrel....I had never felt a lube reduce the friction in the cut like this before, and I will try about any lube to save my tooling, get a better cut, and especially stop chip weldment on the reamer flutes. I am still learning, and I hope I never quit.

I use a reamer pusher, where I can feel the resistance in the cut, and feel the cut as it happens on pre bored chambers.
