Custom actions.... are they worth the $$$$?

My oversized shrouds were fit the same way via bearing surface and thread fit, i just used more threads. Same difference, threads were fit and shoulder was turned to fit into back of bolt. Juice isn't worth the squeeze IMO.
If I understand you, your fitting the threads tight? Are you re cutting the threads in the bolt single point? I also have have oversized steel shrouds for remington style bolts but I do not fit the threads tight. I have definitely seen shroud fit improve a rifle in Benchrest. Tight only works if everything is straight in my experience.

I single point everything. No, I would never fit the shroud threads tight personally. If the firing pin is guided and the shroud is fit good and straight, that's about as good as it's going to get for a Remington on that end, IMO.

I am playing around with some firing pin mods that definitely are showing a difference on target at 100 and 200 yards. It's fun to experiment but not very cost prohibitive if your factor in what your time is worth.

No doubt, that part of it is just to learn and have fun. You'd make 5x more doing cerakote/skim bed builds. If your single pointing the back of the bolt to straighten those threads then fitting the shroud threads to that, Id agree thats a good fix and about as good as it gets. In a production custom I do think the bearing surface is the way to go. I have seen less issues with that design than the ones that are threaded.

OK, irregardless of price...who makes, or will machine, a Custom Action to accecpt a 300 RUM/338 Edge set-up for the Wyatt's 3.99" DBM?

Thanks

[QUOTE="Eternal Student, post: 36953899, member: .... are based off the 700 anyway. Right????

What say you guys?[/QUOTE]

Remington defined the dimensions, then got sold, then got sold, And QC went bye bye. Is the well built, close tolerance, hand finished lump of metal still the Remington?

Here is a thought. 700 VS-SF in .223, the bolt is so sloppy in the action primer strike is off center otherwise not bad. 700 Sendero-SF .338 RUM: receiver scope mount holes so far off a one piece mount could not be used, using two piece mounts rings took a lot of lapping; extractors (pinned variety) fail; came with a J-Lock; trigger very heavy, gritty and non-adjustable with factory internal springs. 700P in .308: 20 moa one piece rail not even close to fitting requiring two piece 20 moa mounts and lots of ring lapping; enough free bore to say seat a 300 gr bullet (if there was such a thing in .308) out of the case body; trigger is hard to describe bad; oh yeah, the firing pin hole is so oversized any factory or handload craters the primer.

Don't get me wrong, they are all shooters with handloads. Well under 1 moa five shot groups and the .338 is the most accurate with a best .37" five shot group best with a 250 gr Scenar although it is difficult to handle the recoil for accuracy.

That said years ago I decided on a custom. Got a custom configured Nesika back when they were located in Poulsbo, Washington (before the disastrous buyout) and when checked out the action was without flaw. My smith at the time checked it out and then seriously checked it out because he couldn't find anything. Custom spec'd barrel, custom spec'd McMillan, custom spec'd reamer, good trigger. The only reason the first five shots fired didn't all go into a single hole was because I got excited and pulled the fifth shot during break in/load chrono'ing/load testing. In 6.5 X 284 no less. Oh yes, it cost a pretty penny to have built.

Had a few more built since then and admittedly some of my brilliant ideas have not exactly worked out BUT none of the custom actions had egregious faults that had to be fixed, even the somewhat looked down on Stillers, they were fine and didn't cost a whole lot of money comparatively speaking.

If you want a rifle that is seriously consistently competitively accurate just bite the bullet and do it right from the get go. I can't believe there is any debate over this.

Borden’s website cover the spec’s. Anyway they are 1.47 in dia. And can accommodate a 338 Edge cartridge.
I’m a single shot shooter for the most part and the BRLXD is a single shot BR action but Borden offers the Timberline models that are 700 Remington foot print and magazine fed. Greg Taylor stock many Borden actions if this is something that you are interested in.

Thank you for the info. I'll need the bottom metal and mags for a Stiller TAC action.

So which custom actions are already opened up to take a 300 RUM seated long and designed for a Wyatts or long style mag? Stiller Predator...Borden...what others?
