Crown on new 308?

I am no gunsmith but I think something is wrong with the crown on my new savage f/tr308. Today I broke it in and sighted in the scope. When I got home I cleaned it again and looked at the crown for the first time.there was a thin rough metal ring out from the crown like it was never reamed. I only shot 40 rounds threw it and used a brass jeg and brush to clean it. It never really grouped from the get go. Any input?

Have a good gunsmith look at it or post a pic or 2 of the crown. It doesnt sound like savages normal crown job.It may be cheaper to just lap it(gunsmith) and use a pro if you dont know how to do it.

Take it back to where you bought it and ask for an exchange. Show the Store Manager, not a clerk, why you want to return it. If the company is any good, they should accommodate you.

The savage f/tr are not a stocking item here so I had to order it. If the crown is bad shouldnt a gunsmith Be able to fix it? Dont want to send it back ,but will be useing this gun to shoot f/tr matches out to 1000 and want a good rifle ???

Yes a gunsmith would be able to fix a bad crown, but they're going to charge you and you shouldn't have to pay because you didn't mess the crown up. Around my area a crown job cost about $75 to $100. Not a big deal but still not your responsibility.

If it's any consolation, Savage gives real quick turn-around times, they may pay for shipping both ways, and if there are any future problems, it is all on record to your advantage. Have it "fixed" by someone other than Savage, and you're on your own. I returned a mdl 10FP because of a defective barrel. It came back in a short time, better than when I sent it: shorter throat, match quality trigger, very accurate and copper free. This was in 2001 before the Accutrigger models became available.

Talked to savage and decided to send it back to them . Sent it back to them yesterday . Thanks for the advice :)

Hallo

You have an excellent rifle and I suggest you following:

- send the gun to a competent gunsmith (not every gunsmith is competent !!!)
- he should make a perfekt crown + a perfekt pillar / metal powder epoxy bedding (very important when you have a laminated stock)

Than you have a perfekt gun.

Most serial rifles have some corners that should be tuned by a competent gunsmith to optimize it.

Tip: when you start to run in a barrel, clean it with JB-Bore Paste + Dewey stock and patches within the first 50 - 75 rounds (1-10 round = after every round / 10 - 75 round = after every 5 round). Thats a very good superfine polish paste and smoothen the barrel suface in this time to prevent fast metal fouling so you can shoot more without a loss of accuracy.
I use super smooth hammer forged barrels that are made within 0,005mm. Then they are hand lapped and after the run in procedure you have a perfekt barrel.
I`ve learned: Stainless barrels are a little bit better than CrMo barrels - but each barrel is different...

What brand of barrels do you use in europe? Over here the aftermarket barrels are not hammer forged.Just a little curious.

The price for a hammer forging machine is 1,3 mio € so there are not a lot of companies who invest so much.
But in europe we have some companies who have this machines and they also forge for other companies like me.
I like hammer forged blanks because they can be made on CIP min +0,005mm - this tolerance can`t be reached with button rifling.
Next to this: when you turn a button rifled barrel the inner diameter can rise up - on a hammer forged it wont shift.

But right made all barrels will shoot !!!
