Big question on barrel cleaning??

I'm getting close to shooting a new barrel (fingers crossed) Just brushing up and trying to decide how i will go about barrel break in. sometimes i can be fussy about it and other times i don't care. well this time I'm feeling fussy.
I Read, somewhere that A brush should NEVER be pulled back through the crown of the barrel???? What???

I have allways brushed with good high quality BR brush. and have allways pulled the brush back down the barrel.
That's how i do it brush up and back down and the brush allways comes back through the crown.
now I'm carefull not to catch the rod or base of the brush on the crown.

I feel if a brush will damage the crown,ya better not shoot any bullets out of it..

Well before i screw something up, thought i would get some opinions on this.

FJIM,
If your brush bothers it your barrel is soft. You will probably get 15 different opinions on a firearms forum.
Good Luck

Thanks butch.
I really think they are trying to gard againest people catching the rod or brush base on the crown and damageing it on the back in.

Here's a few: http://www.6mmbr.com/borecleaning.html See paragraph four, or take your pick. What flavor of ice cream do you like, might be a good analogy.

Ok thanks for that one outdoorsman, I never seen that one before, that wasent where i read it at..but yea i read it there again.. Wow I swear i never knew that. Now i got my cleaning techniques from some old BR guys.
I have cleaned many match barrels that way over the years and dont think i had a problem with them. amazing how we learn things over the years and techniques change.. well I will try it the way that they say..I'm not going to like it but i will try it.

Thanks

I have switched from Shooter's Choice or Butches Bore Shine + JB to using only Wipe Out Patch Out for the past year or so. I still think an occaisional short stroking with JB might be beneficial, but haven't had to do it for awhile. The Wipe Out products are so easy to use & very effective. When breaking in a new barrel, let the copper tell you how often to clean & how much is required. I'd recommend using a SS rod or the new aluminum jags to eliminate false copper readings, and if you have access to a bore scope, use it to check up on yourself occaisionally.

I know this is an old thread but many times people including myself search older threads for answers and advice.

I too never really understood why you would use a bore guide on the chamber end but not on the muzzle crown end. A jag and rod will drag and strike the muzzle crown area hundreds if not thousands of times cleaning during the life of a barrel. I created a simple bore guide for the muzzle crown end and it works really well. We have two sizes at the moment with more coming out soon. There are some good videos on the site too which demonstrate the issue and how the Crown Cradle works. Hope this helps and maybe is seen as a solution or least as extra insurance/precaution for the precision marksman.

If you use a high quality bore guide and are careful (go slowly) on the back stroke you shouldn't cause any damage to the crown.

I use Dewey coated rods with Dewey jags and Dewey brass core brushes to minimize the chance of any damage.

I'm not a bench rest shooters but I know several that clean by pulling the brush back through the bore. I figure these guys know what their doing since their shooting tiny groups.

Anyway, it would seem like torture to have to remove the brush after each forward stroke. If I had to do that I just might take up archery. :)
