Credit Card Hacked with Online Order

Otter said:
It is possible the hack did not occur on Sinclairs end. Not saying it did or didn't, but my staff deal with malware infections all the time and some of these things capture and pass along the keystrokes as you type them. Make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date.

Odds are this is the deal. Malware is dumped on us from everywhere. There are some pretty good Malware blockers out there, I use Ad blocker plus and it does a pretty good job blocking "crap" from my PC.

I've ordered quite a few times from Brownell's/Sinclair over the past year and I'm sure if they had been hacked more of us would know.

Typically these pukes will charge something under a dollar to see if it works and will go through...they don't raise a lot of eye brows that way...if it goes through then they will fire high dollar items pretty quickly to get those approved. The banks have caught onto this and now watch for those charges under a dollar and normally will call you or even preventitively put a hold on the account.

Low life's suck is the bottom line....good luck getting it straighten out CB...it can be a PIA.

Hacked a few years ago, shit shipped in NYC. I've never been, and have no desire to be anywhere close to NYC, as I'm a hick from the sticks! ;D I don't think the culprit was ever caught.

Alerts from banks on odd purchases or purchases over a certain amount are good, as well as changing cards (getting replacements) on a regular basis since it doesn't usually cost anything. Not sure that this would have helped critter bill since the hacking took place within a few days of the order.

Hi, I have been hacked three times and two of those times came from the same vendor. The hackers also changed the mailing address so I didn't get a statement for two months before I noticed something was wrong. I now check my c.c accounts after every time I use my card. The hackers ran my account to over 10K and the bank was reluctant to take the charges off after 3 months. It was finally resolved to my satisfaction, but it was a difficult and time consuming process.
The two times I was hacked came from a company all will know, a Pacific war Navel battle was around that island. I wrote customer service and the boss and never heard a word back.
The other company involved did notify me and it was immediately corrected.

i'm not casting stones, but...

if your card issuer does not catch fraud before you do these days, you should consider switching cards. i work for an issuer, and i can tell you that it's a sign of not being up to date at the issuer level.

it's just an example of one, and if you're happy with your card, i understand not wanting to change. but you might want to at least consider it. unfortunately, credit card fraud is already running some of the smaller issuers out of business which may eventually hurt consumers. but in this internet age, fraud detection is a relatively simple thing and most issuers are really on top of it.

if they changed your mailing address, they didn't hack the vendor, they probably hacked you. you can't change a statement mailing address if all you have is the card number. they would need your SSN or card account information to do that. that's likely why you had such a hard time getting any response from midway and why your bank was reluctant to help. no offense intended, just trying to help.

I have heard older Windows programs are not being automatically updated anymore or Microsoft is discontinuing so to speak.. I wonder if this is making easier pray for hackers?

Critter Bill, They got me a few months ago. Bought a bunch of furniture in kentucky and I'm a NM boy. The bank made it good as well, and after doing a little leg work, more than likely yours and my transactions are not where we got hacked on our cards. It has been out a while but as long as these banks have not updated there ATM Machine software from XP to windows 7 or a later software version the door is wide open for the hackers with the old XP. I no longer use a ATM machine. I cash the paper. Bill

Although I do not check my credit card account after every time I use the card I do check it on line almost every day. On line whether by my computer or smart phone is the best way to keep up with what is going on with your charge account and checking account and it takes only a couple of minutes to review them on line. Waiting to receive your monthly statements by mail or even email means you may be reviewing transactions that could be over a month old.

Thanks for some good comments and suggestions. I would love a few minutes face time with some of these hacker thieves for some old fashioned baseball bat therapy. Too bad they don't use their skills to earn a great living and contribute to society, but they'd rather take the easy route. I'm thinking of giving up the convenience of online ordering and going back to paper checks and snail mail. Dang it, I hate thieves! >:(

Not true. Windows has stopped patching XP for most customers, but the ATM vendors such as Diebold are patching security flaws as they occur. Even when XP was supported there were several days of lag between vulnerability bein reported and patch being issued. Most ATM's are extremely firewalled, and the user interface is totally segregated from the PC that drives the machine. There are several layers of security involved. As much as you don't want your information compromised, I promise you that banks want it compromised even less.

I'm not saying it can't happen but in my professional opinion it's no more likely with machines still running XP than it is win 7.

I manage several ATM's for a living.

For a hefty fee, Microsoft will continue to provide patches to the XP operating system. My understanding many ATMs are still running this old softer. I'm sure they are paying the man, otherwise the Feds would drop the FDIC insurance. We are paying due to HIPPA requirements. It is a real pain for a large corporation that runs thousands of applications to upgrade to Windows 7.

During April, I sold over 3,000.00 in 4 sales. Unfortunately for me
those purchases were made on stolen CC info. US Government cards
to be exact. I am out the merchandise, and will be out of most of the money.
CC processing firms are not the business mans friend. They will take my monthly fees
but will not stand good for any of my loses. I have not made a decision
on continuing to take CCs LDS

Larry, I am very sorry to hear that. You are truly one of the good guys in the business. I guess I had never thought of it from the vendor's perspective. What is your protection from fraud on credit card transactions? Private insurance? Seems to me that the credit card companies could do a better job of fraud detection and protection of seller and buyer.

Bill, I have no protection. Of course I didnt know this until
these incidents occurred. All I get from the processing rep
is how sorry he is that this happened to me, with no offer
of any financial help. Needless to say, if I do remain taking cards,
it will be w/a different processor.
With Jewells failure to deliver adequate inventory, I may as well
take paper only. I am out of most models 80% of the time. LDS

For the benefit of the rest of us, Mr. Scott, who is your CC processing co?

P.S. I've made several transactions w/you over the years, if you don't take CC that won't stop me from any future purchases. I think we did it by check anyway. Just sayin'.

Sometimes I wonder if the background agenda of forcing financial vendors to disallow credit card processing for gun related sales is driving this issue. I believe the Obama mayorial soldiers of Bloomberg, emanual and the like with their pressure tactics with their financial friends create a lot of issues that are going under the radar. It sounds awful convenient to set up some government cards just for this use.

Sadly probably true:(

My processor is Banc Card of America. Not associated w/Bank of America. Its fronted by a local bank. In fact I have not been w/this processor but about 6mos. I am in the process of getting info w/another co, "FIRST DATA"

Its a matter of offered protection VS yearly cost. It may boil down to paper payment only. Since Jewell wont keep me stocked and I'm out 80% of the time, paper might be the way to go.

Come to think about the government conspiracy aspect. The postal inspector said I was among many in the shooting sports industry that was hit. LDS

Interesting - My bank, Wells Fargo gave me a call while I was at the range a few weeks ago and asked if I had made any purchases in a city about 100 miles away. I told them no and they shut down my debit card and issued a new one. The total amount was just over $1,000 and they have since replaced all the money into my account.

I asked the rep if they could tell where the hack occurred and she said no, that the number could have been obtained six months before and just used by someone who bought the number. This was not my credit card but a debit card, which is only used in person and never for online purchases.

My Credit Union's VISA dept. called me at 8 AM on a Sunday morning a couple of months back. Saturday afternoon someone had attempted to purchase $1800 worth of women's clothing, shoes and accessories at 3 different retail stores a long way from where I live. Visa told me that the POS did not have my 3 digit security number from the back of the card and that's what tripped them up. Saturday morning I had just placed an order with Widner's Supply. The new card took 5 days to get here. It was a pain.
