COVID-19 Map worldwide, with statistics

Here's an updated graphic from that data.

The strain on Italy's health system is such that they're essentially having to ration ventilators by age. Post 60 you don't get one.

What really stands out to me is Iran’s count. What good is a dust mask when their face masks, whatever they call that scarf, doesn’t protect them..........unless they take that off when they’re in the tent.

From a Financial Times article yesterday:

Emergency doctors in Italy, the European epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic, were this week given guidance on “catastrophe medicine”. As the number of patients requiring intensive care balloons and hospitals run out of intensive care beds, doctors were instructed to “aim to guarantee intensive treatment to patients with the greatest chance of therapeutic success”.

With the grim task of selecting patients unlikely to survive, Italy’s health authorities have pleaded with the countries’ friends and allies for emergency supplies. On Thursday, they finally arrived — from Shanghai. The China Eastern flight brought a medical team and 31 tonnes of supplies including ventilators.

Best graphic analysis I’ve yet seen.

Countries that got containment working well soon flatlined increasing cases being diagnosed, death rate.

Those that didn’t - or haven’t - see exponential increases.

And it takes just one super-spreader escaping containment to effect the move from one group to the other, as with S. Korea.

Without a vaccine and with a virus which is contagious prior to being symptomatic it's simply about what cost you are prepared to impose on individuals and the economy via "social distancing" to flatten the burden on the healthcare system. People can't stay 1-3m away from each other forever. So it's about giving healthcare systems the time to prepare, including more immediate things such as ramping up the production ventilators and critical care beds, and to search for a vaccine. Peak strain management. This will likely play out over more than a year. And we still don't know for how long someone who has contracted COVID19 and recovered will maintain their immunity.

Again from the Financial Times yesterday, in Italy:

Siare Engineering — based in the northern province of Bologna, in one of the country’s most affected regions — has cancelled all orders from abroad. It is now only producing for Italy, Gianluca Preziosa, the managing director, said.

“All of a sudden, we found ourselves facing an operation of titanic proportions: we had to produce in a couple of months what this company would normally produce in two years,” Mr Preziosa wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

Siare Engineering is expected to deliver 2,000 ventilators by the end of July. The Italian army is expected to send 25 trained technicians next week to help increase production. Each ventilator costs €17,000.

Siare is Italy's only producer of ventilators.

According to a study by RnRMarketResearch in 2016 https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rel...-share-held-by-5-top-companies-591894561.html 50% of the world's supply of ventilators was from 5 companies: Philips Healthcare (Netherlands), ResMed Inc. (U.S.), Medtronic plc (Ireland), Becton, Dickinson and Company (U.S.), and Getinge Group (Sweden). They note that some of the other players in this market are Dräger Group (Germany), Smiths Group plc (U.K.), Teleflex Incorporated (U.S.), Hamilton Medical AG (Switzerland), and GE Healthcare (U.S.).

I know this sounds strange, but I’m glad that people on here are taking this seriously. Among my bird dog friends, I’m a pariah for trying to get them to get past the politics and take action.

Just left corona central otherwise known as Walmart. The shelves for the most part were completely empty. I saw a deer dead on the way in and coming back a guy was cutting the backstraps out. People are in a total panic.

I feel your pain!! I have friends and family that act like it’s all cooked up by the media and the democrats just to beat Trump in November. I’m not sure how they manage look past the fact that it’s a world wide problem.

Yes, everyone is panicking but this disease is in it's infancy. We don't know how bad it's going to get. It's no time to be complacent. Better to take precautions than attending funerals.

January 21 1 case in the U.S. No big deal.
February 1 8 No deaths
February 21 35 No deaths
March 1 76 2 deaths
March 8 417 22 deaths
March 14 2,977 57 deaths Now I'm starting to worry.

Wash your hands and quit picking your nose.

"And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done." Feb 26

Take roughly 3000 confirmed cases in the US today and compound that at 33% per day which is more or less the trajectory exhibited by most countries. In a week from now you have more than 22,000. In two weeks 165,000.

Circa 23% of the Italian population in over 65. (1) It's hitting them hard. How healthy is the US population? Let's all hope this thing begins to recede soon so that scientists (and not science denying politicians) have the time to figure out a vaccine before any second wave.

(1) According to the CIA World Factbook that figure was 16% for the US population in 2018.
