"Japanese junk" was a term I heard a lot when I was a kid. Funny how things change.I remember the day that everyone said “I wouldn’t buy that, it’s made in Japan.” Now Japanese is considered top tier.
This is a great price. Been shopping and around $100 is $40 better than any others.... BTW I went to the Mitutoyo site and checked this company and it is legit. Mitutoyo told me that's the best way to know. They have a dealer look- up function. thanksMitutoyo 500-196-30 Series 500 ABSOLUTE Digimatic Caliper, 0 to 6" (0 to 150 mm), imperial/metric

I've found Amazon will stand behind things bought from their 3rd party sellers. You can return them, but I try and stay away from amazon when possible. For one because I don't want to give my money to them, but more so because of what you just described happens all the time with any item. They allow companies to sell knockoffs of anything and everything. The problem is that Amazon is just so convenient, its hard not to use it.
I remember when I was 6 or 7 years old around the early 50’s. I got a sheet metal toy truck that was made in Japan. I eventually tore it up and found it was made from a Schlitz beer can turned wrong side out."Japanese junk" was a term I heard a lot when I was a kid. Funny how things change.
As a machinist I don't like calipers for anything I need an accurate and consistence measurement. As a Machinist and Buisiness Owner, a lot of the problem arises from the use of digital tools And the ease of manufacture.
Call us old fashion or what ever, we prefer our men not to use them in our Shop.
I recall the same. I remember the first time I had a MIT Mike in my hand thought it felt bulky and cheap. Over the 1st year it went thru many hands in the shop and was not handled as delicately as a Starrett (it got beat) but it always held its accuracy…When I bought ALL of my "Mits" ; back in the seventies ,as a young Diemaker trainee , I caught a lot of flack from the old hands , who gave me grief for not getting Starrett or Lufkin , but the reality was , I just couldn't afford them .
Now ; Fifty years later , all that "Jap Junk" is just as accurate as the day it was brand new , and I've had many ask if I wanted to sell them , because they "hold" their accuracy . Working in DOD Aerospace firms most of my working life-time , they had to go to Inspection every sixty days for "checks" and most of the time I got a new sticker on first check , without any adjustments .
And NO ! They aren't for sale . But thanks for thinking about it .![]()
If Amazon is the vendor and over 100 dollars you should get the real McCoy.
